RE: 🇹🇳 If the Steemit Team Came to Tunisia: A Picnic with the Taste of a Whole Country

You have planned a wonderful picnic for the Steemit Team. I really liked how you included not only different Tunisian foods but also the local culture and the beautiful setting of Sidi Bou Saïd.

The food list is quite impressive, and I would definitely be curious to try some of these dishes. The brik and makroudh especially caught my attention. I have never tried them before. Which one would you recommend to someone tasting Tunisian food for the first time?

I also liked your idea of inviting other Tunisian Steemians because it would make the picnic more social and give the team a chance to meet local members. And I think the idea of sitting together, sharing food, and talking without following a strict schedule would make the visit more memorable.

I have some curosity If you had to choose only three Tunisian dishes for the Steemit Team to try, which three would you choose?

You made me think with that last question because choosing only three Tunisian dishes is much harder than planning the entire picnic.
If someone was trying Tunisian food for the first time, between brik and makroudh I would probably give them the brik first. A hot, crispy brik with tuna, egg and a little lemon is something I would really want a visitor to experience fresh. Then I would keep the makroudh for later with tea, because after all the salty and spicy food, the date filling would be a very nice way to finish.
And if you really force me to choose only three dishes, I think I would go with brik, slata mechouia and makroudh. The brik for the crispy side of our food, slata mechouia for that grilled and slightly smoky taste with olive oil, and makroudh because we also need something sweet at the end.
But I would probably cheat and put a small bowl of harissa on the table anyway. I don't think I could introduce Tunisian food properly without it.
Thanks for asking this because now I'm curious too: if you came to this picnic, which one would you try first?

Thank you so much for your kind feedback. I think there are many more delicious Tunisian foods, because it was quite tricky for you to choose only three. 😄

Brik, slata mechouia, and makroudh are all new to me. I searched online to learn more about these dishes, and they all look delicious. I would really love to try Tunisian brik with tuna, egg, and lemon first. It sounds tasty and also seems like a healthy choice. After that, I would definitely like to try something sweet, and I think makroudh would be a great choice to finish the meal.

By the way, is there any meat-based Tunisian dish that you would recommend? I really enjoy beef, chicken, and mutton dishes, so I would love to know which meat dish I should try first.

Haha, yes, choosing only three was definitely the hardest part. Tunisian food has so many dishes that I felt a little guilty leaving the others out.

I think you made a good choice starting with brik, especially with tuna, egg and a squeeze of lemon, although I should warn you that it is fried, so I wouldn’t exactly call it the healthiest thing on the table. But when it is hot and crispy, it is really hard to resist.

For a meat dish, since you enjoy beef, chicken and mutton, I would personally recommend Tunisian couscous with lamb first. The meat becomes very tender and the couscous absorbs all the flavor from the sauce, vegetables and spices, so it gives you a really complete idea of Tunisian home cooking. If you prefer something more grilled and smoky, then merguez would be another great choice, especially with bread, salad and a little harissa on the side.

So your tasting order is getting serious now: brik first, lamb couscous after that, and makroudh with mint tea to finish. At this point, I think you would need to come to Tunisia very hungry.
