Makina Sea Log : June 25, 2026
When texting a new friend, this morning, about meeting up this weekend my final post said, "Let me know whenever it's a good time for you as my schedule is very flexible to the point of having none."
We had a good chuckle in a follow up voice call. He said it reminded him of his carefree, younger, days hitching through Mexico and Central America. It took me back to periods in my youth as well.
One thing about the boating life is that there are normally a constantly growing TODO List to fill that free time. The list had been mounting since my arrival at my mooring in Mahone Bay (the town). With hunker down weather for most of the week it was mostly time spent below reading, internetting, eating and sleeping as the rain beat gently on the deck above. With the sun out this morning it seemed time to get active.
My first mystery was how was water getting into my dinghy? When adding a second line to the mooring ball on the weekend the water was ankle deep before finishing the job. My assumption was that it may have taken a puncture in its flooring over the winter. While hoisting it out of the water it became quickly obvious that the stern plug was missing. Lost over the winter at the shipyard one can only assume. An easy repair once a replacement plug could be had. In the meantime she was dropped back into the water while mentally adding a new item to the TODO List.
After adding 20 liters of needed diesel from a jug on deck my attention was drawn to last night's mystery. When switching on the water pressure to do last night's dishes flowing water could be heard in the engine compartment. Checking inside it appears a right angled connection on the water line had worked loose.
Due to it being tucked away in a difficult position to work on it, it may warrant a trip down, what the Admiral affectionately calls, the Glory Hole. 😂
There is a container found under the hatch to the Glory Hole which must be removed for access to the engine compartment below. When removing it it surprised me how heavy and cluttered it was. It must have taken 45 minutes to an hour to get all the lines untangled and storage found for them below.
By that time, of course, a break was in order. It seemed like a good time over a warm drink to take care of another TODO item; linking whatsapp from my phone to my laptop as prep to help my friend with a Ubuntu install this weekend.
Then the thought occurred to me; why not make a log post while online. 🤔
It's true that my schedule is mine alone yet Makina is a demanding mistress that fills that void.
[Note To Self : 637.5 hours on the engine just after oil change and new impellers installed at the shipyard]
May the wind be at your back!
