Saraswati puja
Saraswati Puja is a Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, wisdom, learning, music, and the arts. It is celebrated with great devotion, especially by students, teachers, artists, and scholars. The festival usually falls in the Hindu month of Magha (January–February) and is widely observed across India, particularly in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, and parts of North India.
Goddess Saraswati is depicted wearing white clothes, symbolizing purity and peace, and seated on a lotus or a swan, which represents wisdom and discernment. She holds a veena, signifying music and creativity, and a book, symbolizing knowledge. On this day, people worship her to seek blessings for intellectual growth, creativity, and success in education.
During Saraswati Puja, homes, schools, and colleges are beautifully decorated. Idols of the goddess are installed, and special prayers are offered. Students place their books, pens, and musical instruments near the idol, believing that the goddess will bless them with knowledge and concentration. It is considered auspicious for young children to begin their education on this day, a ritual known as “Vidyarambham.”
Devotees often wear yellow or white clothes, as yellow symbolizes wisdom and prosperity. Traditional sweets and offerings, such as fruits and rice preparations, are made to the goddess. Cultural programs, including music and dance performances, are also organized to honor Saraswati, the goddess of arts.
Saraswati Puja teaches us the importance of knowledge, discipline, and creativity in life. It reminds us that true learning leads to wisdom and helps shape a better society.
