I find that the truth is often too grim for some people to actually even perceive it, which causes them to dismiss it out of hand, and therefore you as either a cynic or a nutjob.

That's all beside the point, his main point is those that refuse to believe that certain awful things can or do happen, particularly in spite of established fact and public record, provide literal cover to those that do these things, make it easier to do these things, and therefore more +EV and game theoretically correct (from their sick perspective) to do so.
