Are We Making Electric Vehicles Wrong?

in #science7 years ago (edited)

A big problem with the current generation of electric vehicles is the range. This whole issue is currently hindering mass adoption of electric vehicles and has been for some time. I think there's a way to solve the range issue and by doing so, also the issue of expensive individual battery replacements.

Tesla's new model 3 can only go 354 km (220 miles)1. That will get you from London to York or at a stretch from New York to Washington DC. This is fine for probably most journeys done by car, but what if this Tesla is your only vehicle and you regularly need to go long distances. You're not going to buy a Tesla, are you? Once you've hit that range according to Tesla you have to "plug in when you arrive and your Tesla will be charged by morning". Even using their limited scattering of superchargers you'll have to be waiting a minimum of 30 minutes2. This simply isn’t practical.

Tesla Model 3: not practical?

Compare this to the current setup where fuelling your car takes a matter of minutes and there are hundreds of thousands of places you can do it in the world. As of December 2016 there were 769 Tesla supercharger stations globally3. There are currently about 8,500 petrol stations in the UK alone4. Tesla has a long way to go. Does this also mean every other car company is also going to install their own branded charging stations? That seems to me like an expensive exercise.

Expensive and unnecessary?

Surely a better way would be to use the existing fuelling infrastructure and adapt that to power the next generation of vehicles. But it's currently not possible the way these cars are designed.

I propose that at the existing fuelling stations the car batteries should be replaced by fully charged ones.

Petrol stations will adapt to be charging hubs where they are storing, servicing and charging thousands of batteries each day. A customer will pull up, the batteries will slot out of the front, back or side and a new fully charged one slotted in. Kind of like a Formula 1 pit stop. It costs about £6 ($7.85) to charge a Tesla at a residential property overnight in the UK5. How about everyone pays double that to swap the battery. Worth it for the time saving don’t you think? That’s still considerably cheaper than filling up with fuel and you’re on your way within minutes.

The batteries dropped off at the ‘battery stations’ will now be checked, charged and reused and any that are now no longer efficient can be taken out of the market and replaced. The charging markup taken at the station will be used to pay for the overheads and to buy new batteries to put into the system.

With this system individuals are no longer burdened with expensive batteries to replace; existing petrol stations can survive; electric car companies don’t need to spend time and money building charging stations and everyone can keep on driving.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Could this actually work?

I agree there needs to be a standardized plug-in battery pack, with charging stations all around the country.
We just need to fire all the current politicians who are bought and paid for by the petrol industries

I can't believe there's still people digging for oil?! To me it seems crazy when the technology is there and proven that we no longer need to keep polluting the planet. These countries and cities saying we need to not sell petrol cars from 2035/2040/2050 etc. That still seems way took long for me when we have 100% electric vehicles now!

Great post as always :)

Someone has to start somewhere and Tesla is doing an amazing job! If it weren't for Tesla and Elon Musk you wouldn't see this new rush in development of electric cars. The infrastructure is growing, it pretty much get's doubled or tripled every year! The new Tesla 3 has two options, the second one has a range of 310 miles, that is almost 500 km. Who drives 500 km without taking a break? Take a break, drink a coffee and move on. Your article really sounds like a "first world problem". There are so many benefits in owning an electric car and all disadvantages are slowly disappearing with the higher adoption rate and technological improvements.

I am not negative about electric cars, far from it! I love them and all that Tesla (and others) are doing. We need to stop using fossil fuels now! I agree the 310 range is very impressive but if all the car manufacturers start installing charging points everywhere it's going to use up a lot of roadside space and look very ugly. Plus the expensive batteries are quite an issue for consumer uptake. Just trying to think outside the box on how the whole system could potentially work better. I'm no scientist but thought about this idea so decided to post.

Haha I kinda feel the same^^
I am a scientist and I might have the right solution for you: fuel cells. By creating hydrogen sustainably
via microorganism(read my hydrogen farting bacteria post) we would be able to use electric cars just like normal cars. These cars already exist, but hydrogen production is expensive and not clean at all. I don't know when I will buy a car but I know when I buy one it will be an electric one.

I'm mostly curating in #science and am always glad to see quality posts like yours peeking out between the garbage and plagiarism!
Especially because this seems to be your first post, you're off to a good start.
It would be nice if you credited your pictures too, though.

That was actually a great suggestion and I will follow that. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! Good point about crediting the photos. I was careful to use only creative commons and Tesla promo pictures.

It's a bit late for the OCD nomination now, especially because I'm not even in the team anymore.

Still, even creative commons needs to be credited!

Very insightful article here's my blog about shopping for a model x https://steemit.com/tesla/@briandenver/i-m-going-to-buy-a-tesla-model-x let me know what you think.

I think his products are good. And Tesla is an excellent company
