Ant Under The Microscope 🔬

Last night my partner said to me he had found a specimen for me. It was odd for a slightly big ant to be crawling on my desk, let alone an ant at all. It must have been fate. So I quickly grabbed a petri dish so my partner could capture it. I was a bit scared the ant might find a way out so I taped the edges. As I was doing so, the ant would charge right at me each time I turned the dish, snapping those slightly big pincers at me.

Of course my aim was to make a permanent slide out of it but I didn’t want to do it with it alive and kicking. So I placed the petri dish into the freezer to put the ant to sleep. Plus this is more humane to do.

Due to the specimen being large, I needed to make a well to mount the specimen within. I didn’t have any PVA glue to create the walls, so I used what I could find that was near me. It wasn’t the best to use a sponge like material to create the walls because air bubbles just kept appearing in the mounting medium. But I had no choice. As you can see from the photos below, a few large bubbles formed after drying.

Instead of showing a series of photos of the microscopic view, I thought I would film it and create a few GIFs instead. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed filming it. It may take a while to load them but I wanted to share the experience of viewing the specimen under the microscope.

In regards to the below GIF, I was pretty amazed at how thin the middle joining part was between the two main body sections. I am guessing this is the hip. It makes you wonder how the ant carries itself with all that weight on either side.

Here the GIF below, I am guessing was we see here are the the veins in the rear section. I also adjusted the iris diaphragm so you could see more of the details inside.

Among the prepared slides I had purchased, there was one of an ant. Comparing that ant to mine, my ant is more than double the size. Also those pincers look like they could cause some real pain. Overall I am glad this ant came onto my desk some how. Maybe it was Soju who brought it up. It is very interesting to prepare and view.

I worked a lot in the lab of microbiology so I studied many micro organisms under the microscope. Thanks for recalling my memory.

hahaha no worries.
What would you say is the most exciting thing you have looked at under the microscope?

I love the GIFs ! Really cool way to share the microscope experience. It really felt like I was looking at the microscope as you adjusted the focus and moved the slide around. What we call "sugar ants" around my neck of the woods are tiny little ants, sounds like this was a little bigger. The last GIF looks like some kind of alien egg sack or something :) So cool!

Much love - Carl

Thanks @carlgnash! I am super glad the GIFs were able to deliver the microscope experience as I had hoped for. I usually only see tiny little ants around outside my house. I wonder what the big ones are for. I'm guessing something like a warrior since it kept trying to charge at me. lol.

hahahaha 'alien egg sack', it does look like it now that you've mentioned it.

Cheers!

They are amazing photos, looks like a sugar ant. Great idea from you're partner.
You should put a blown up photo in @art @artzone.
I find lots of dead insects when Im studying, should send them to both of you.

Interesting, didn't think it as art. I changed one of the tags. Thanks.
hahahaha imagine that; sending insects in the mail; Soju would think she is getting sent treats. She loves eating insects.

oooo sugar ant; I was wondering what sort of ant it was.

I wouldn't want to be an insect in your house at the moment. Lol😁

HAHAHAHA but you would be added to my awesome collection!

You're taking the looking at small things around you suggestion to heart ;)

hahahaha 😉😉😘😘
It is way too exciting to stop.

Don't, I'm enjoying them

My human was on vacation for a few days and I could not comment on your work with the microscope. It has been amazingly real! You have left me speechless with the different specimens but this one! totally awesome to see what each part looks like and the process to achieve it woow! meow!

Soju: MEOW! Did they go on vacation without you again?

Hope you had a great vacation! I wouldn't mind one myself.
Thank you for your support and kind words. This particular specimen was pretty exciting to do I must admit.

meow! if they left without me again. :(

what a great mystery of a small ant. We need technology that can reveal it. But, we also need a deep feeling to understand

Nicely put.

This is really cool to look at even though I'm not into killing stuff. That said ants are little shits.

Mwahahaha they are. Cheers @choogirl
