The part I don't get is this: if the phone number didn't work, how did they agree to meet at 2 pm? Was he dreaming that or did the writer leave out that detail?

    Perhaps she just shut down the phone, or changed her number. I like the dreaming theory though :)

    Here is the answer..
    First they agreed to meet at 2 pm, but when the time came, she deliberately switched off her phone so that he could not contact her.
