Basic Security Tips for Living Online

in #security8 years ago (edited)

I'm really pleased to steemit take shape. I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves. Having worked in the IT industry for over 2 decades (yeah I'm like ... old!) I'd like to start this post with some tips for online security. I hope you find them of value.

  1. Use a password manager to store your passwords. Offline is better than online.
  2. Use the password manager to create the password.
  3. Never re-use the same password for multiple sites.
  4. Create a unique username for each site, especially financial ones.
  5. Always turn on and enable 2-Factor Authentication everywhere you offer it, and don't store the rotating 6 digit code in the same password manager that has the password. For example, if you use 1Password for storing your passwords, then store the 2FA code in Google Authenticator or Authy.
  6. For sites that require you to use your email address as the username, try to have an email you use that isn't associated with your real name.
  7. Pay for and use a good VPN while at the coffee shop. For ultra paranoid, use at home and on mobile too! I like protonmail's new VPN service, and I've heard good things about PIA (Private Internet Access).
