In the month of March, I sow (my FREE seeds!) Thank you seed associations ๐๐ป
Here in the South of France seed associations are growing in popularity as a way of encouraging the use of non GMO local varieties by handing out what we need for free.
Since acquiring some land upon which we will grow our own food this year (for the first time) we have been looking for the right way to get our hands on seeds. Some suggested we go see all the local farmers who are likely to have seed stocks which will have been in the family for generations, perfectly adapted to this region.
However, upon discovering seed associations I feel sure this is a less time-consuming & 'better for the whole' route to success.
How does it work?
The association works by taking a small deposit (โฌ5) after which we can choose from a fantastic variety of seeds and walk out with any quantity we choose, free of charge.
(Sorry it's all in french! I can't find the translate option)
The deposit is returned to us if we collect our own seeds at the end of the season and return them to the association in around the same quantity as what we took at the beginning of the season.
We will be aiming to collect our seeds and return them back to the association not so much for our deposit, but more because we can see what a great idea this is and would like to play a part in their growth & success.
Further to that I seriously love their seed blowing logo man ;)
I encourage all of you to seek out your nearest seed associations and start growing right away. Personally I am looking to grow vegetables which yield the highest nutrition in the fastest grow times. These two factors seem essential to me.
You might also want to look at micro greens which are very effective for this purpose, though the association idea wouldn't work with them as they are not grown to seed.
True Leaf Market offer a decent selection.
Why is this so important?
Food prices are set to rise quickly this year with extreme weather around the world leading to huge crop losses or late planting.
We have seen as much as a 10% increase on certain food products here in France already this year.
So... as the title of this post indicates, March is the month to sow!
Happy planting one and all ๐ฑ

Here in America we call them "seed banks" but when I tried to look up a local one just now I had to go through most of a page of results for pot seeds before I got to one. I like to save seed from time to time, you know that it will do well in your garden.
Ah yes. Now that you say "seed banks" I recognise the name. Just hadn't thought much about them till now. Seems like a perfect idea to me and very grateful to have one nearby.
Though we are still trying to figure out how to make our land sodden before we can rotavate! Apparently we are in a drought as we've had no rain for months.
you might need a hose ;)
Well done, @samstonehill
I love very much the respect for nature that the association demonstrates: nobody has to make money on whatever nature gives us for FREE!
I, who am notoriously lazy, yesterday planted some basil plants: will be a great success! LOL ;)
You received an automatic upvote, because I believe in you and I love what you create! ๐
