How to Break the Cycle (Without Losing Your Mind)
So, how do we stop the cycle? It’s not about being a drill sergeant to yourself. In fact, being mean to yourself actually makes it worse! Here is a better way:
- Be Kind to Yourself: When you realize you've been procrastinating, don't beat yourself up. Guilt just adds more negative emotions, which makes you want to avoid work even more! Forgive yourself and just try to start fresh.
- Lower the Bar: If a task feels too big, make it tiny. Don't try to "Write a whole essay." Just try to "Write one sentence." It’s much harder for your brain to be scared of a single sentence!
- Acknowledge the Fear: Next time you feel the urge to avoid something, ask yourself: "What am I actually feeling right now? Am I scared of failing? Am I bored?" Once you name the feeling, it loses its power over you.
Stop waiting for the "perfect" moment or the "perfect" mood. Just start small, be gentle with yourself, and watch how much easier it gets!
