RE: Freedom Requires Respect
I'm with you fully! We shall be careful indeed about what we 'censor' and how we do this. I must say, I don't have a perfect solution at all. I know it is so difficult when deciding on some content not be 'allowed' or at least 'so much not wanted' that we need to do something about it.
That said, I also realise more and more larger part of society can be steered in certain directions by a small group of people, quite easily; Especially in this day and age where we have the Internet available all day long. I can give a few other examples that happened in the Netherlands, which is driving a change in public/collective 'opinion', while only a few actually have a real opinion while the rest are just following the none-relevant and in some case BS arguments.
Journalists shall be protected for sure. But their work is of a different category than the 'fake news' created and promoted on social media, mostly (if not always) by others than journalist. That said: I must say, journalism is not what it was before. Probably by the fast pace of news spread across the Internet, depth in journalism is mostly gone, as fact checking is - more or less - gone as well. Sure, this doesn't count for many journalists and news channels, but in every country we have those channels (paper, TV, Internet) through which the quick - not checked - news is pushed out.
And the case with Pirate Bay: I think the ban of this service should not have been executed. The content uploaders should've been gone after; Although I also know this was and still is a very time consuming activity, and maybe not even possible to find them; And when found them, to prosecute them.
Long story short: Agree with you we shall be very careful with censoring and applying rules to Freedom of Speech and Word.
