Sewing a Jersey Hat - 29 December 2025

I was very pleased I got the chance to sew again. I needed to make an adult size jersey hat and found a pattern on You Tube and followed all the instructions very closely.

Below you can see what my pattern looked like when I finished drafting it :

I then cut the pattern piece and found left over jersey fabric, which is not great but this was a test hat to check for size, length and shape.

In the New Year I will try and find some proper weights for when I put a paper pattern piece on top of fabric. Using my torch, empty cup and scissors worked to some extent but the photo looks a bit abstract.

Once I’d cut the two long pieces on the fold I started sewing on the overlocker.

I still need to sort the stitching quality on the overlocker as you may be able to see below the stitching looks too loose. I’ve tried 'everything' unsuccessfully :

The sewing didn’t take longer than 10 minutes.

I was very happy with the result. I think that for future reference I’d like to make it a bit shorter and use a different type of jersey.

There are many versions of this sewing pattern and instructions on You Tube. The one I share below has background music but it’s very clear to understand what to do in case you’re interested.

Thank you for reading !
