Some fun English at the movie theater in Da Nang

I am really happy that the Vietnamese try to accommodate any language other than their own. They certainly don't have to and these days with the various translation apps they could get away with not having any.

I don't know why most countries decide to have English as well as the local language but one thing is for sure, native-English speakers really do have it easy over here. This doesn't mean that the English is always correct though, it is often something that is referred to as Engrish and when we find these things we are not making fun of the locals.

I am kind of making fun of the expensive businesses that have it up though because this stuff probably wasn't cheap and with the amount of teachers and foreigners here I think it would make sense to at least run it by someone who understands the language before you have some custom made wall built.

This was taken in the hallway of a movie theater, which also fortunately frequently has movies in English. When a Hollywood film makes its was over here it is almost always the original soundtrack with Vietnamese subtitles. For things for young children like cartoons they will often overdub the film into spoken Vietnamese because very young kids can't read yet even if they can speak. I went to one of these films one day, I don't recall what it was because I left early since I had no idea what was being said.

Back to the hallway. The first one, although wrong, kind of seems appropriate for a fun place like a cinema but this second one is kind of a downer for an establishment that is supposed to make people feel good.

This is just a question of a single letter missing but in Ebonics or street talk of the west, it is still kind of ghetto-correct even with the final "u" missing.

I still think it is rather depressing for a place that for the most part features comedy films.

This still isn't my favorite that I have seen. Unfortunately the place went out of business but it was a full-service spa of sorts and it listed all of the services like facials, hair treatments and then a wide array of "massacres" instead of "massage."

The good news for that business is that this very poor interpretation of English actually resulted in them getting more business than they probably would have if they had spelled it correctly. Everyone wanted to go and see what the "one hour full body massacre" was all about.

If you ever travel around this part of the world you can expect to find slight mistakes like this all over the place in every country other than Singapore. I do find it fun when I get to see them but at the same time I feel like they really should simply ask someone who is a native speaker before they print something like any of this.
