Emancipation Proclamation - Who was REALLY Freed?
This is serious and requires serious thinking not emotions.
It is said that President Lincoln ended Slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation but is that true of the whole of the union? Two northern states had slaves up to 7 years after that proclamation was issued. It was for the Southern states only in an attempt to get the southern black men to fight the Confederacy because the North was losing. But that is not my point just a tidbit of FACT.
Who did Lincoln really free? Don't automatically run to Slaves before thinking it through. I am not saying slavery was good from any end or perspective, from African traders to American slave markets, all BAD! But think for one minute what happened after they were freed. Many stayed on the Plantations working, why do you think that was? I ask again WHO WAS REALLY FREED? So let's look at this from this perspective and you tell me where I am wrong.
When the Slave was owned by the Master and worked the Plantation in some capacity what did the Master have to provide for the slaves? He had to feed them and their wives and kids, he had to house them, get them medical treatment, educate (to a point I know they didnt learn reading and writing but they were taught a skill) and any other incidental costs associated with owning anything that you need to work on a farm. A tractor a Cow whatever it is has a cost of upkeep. So when the slaves were freed who paid for their food? Housing? Medical? Clothing? Educations? Starting to grasp the point yet?
I am not saying we need slavery back I am only saying that the slaves were not freed the Slave Owners were. They got to stop paying for all the upkeep and such on the men and women and children and still got to get them to work in their fields. Now they just paid them a salary of some kind and the former Slave had to care for his family and provide. The cost of running the plantation actually plummeted with the freedom of the slaves, they only paid wages and had no interest or cause to provide the other things they had previously for free anymore. Sure you maybe could stay in the shack on the Plantation with your family but you paid out of your wages for that shack, sure you may have a small plot to grow food but you worked the big plots and again paid for your small plot to grow food to eat.
Seems to me the Plantation Owner was freed. There was no separation bonuses or such things given and they basically threw millions or whatever number it was, of people into the streets with no income, home, prospects, other than the Plantation work, and the Plantation owner just got his slave back without the overhead and at a cheaper cost per crop.
AGAIN, not saying we need slavery back. Just wondering if anyone ever thought about who was really freed and who was re-enslaved in that Proclamation of Lincolns?
