Innocent Looking But Potentially Deadly - Nanoose British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦

This railway track for the most part is no longer in service yet I remember an incident that happened many years ago where this intersection was to be known as extremely dangerous.

The road is so low on either side that you cannot see traffic over either direction. To the left a blind corner into a stop sign and to the right the traffic light onto the highway.

The incident I am referring to was when someone decided to try go over the tracks only to find that traffic was backed up and was stuck on the tracks while the train was coming. Traffic behind him not able to see pulled forward basically pinning the vehicle on the tracks and traffic in the other lane did not allow any room for him to move either. Some quick thinking by the driver he drove his truck into the ditch just before the train collided with him. No injuries but everyone was lucky this is a long straight stretch allowing just enough time for the trail to slow without careening off the track.

Every time I pass through Nanoose I think of looking over while my father drove past to see the train wizz by sparks flying as the brakes were applied and seeing the truck drop off the side of the road. I did not realize then how lucky the whole situation was but now I can’t help but wonder how bad it all could have been.
