Well, yes and no. It used to be a custom, when making a deal you would "spit on it" and shake. Most people don't do that anymore, but I have seen it done. It's rather nasty to me. I would say that @janton has seen it before.
I've seen deals worth thousands of dollars sealed with nothing more than a handshake, no contracts to sign, people just giving their word and following through with it.
