In honour of the successful test flight of the @Spacex Falcon Heavy rocket, the last few days of our #SelfDirectedLearning (@homeschooling) week have been focused upon Space! So we decided to make some @starman galaxy slime and thought I would share it with our @science and @homeschooling friends on @steemit !)

Most glue based slime recipes recommend using Elmers School Glue, but when I first started making this slime we were living in Thailand and Elmers was very hard to find so I tried a generic clear school glue and we (OK mainly me) were so happy when it worked!

Now the other ‘main’ ingredient of our slime is borax. “Whoa!" I hear you say "Borax? Are you crazy? Isn’t that stuff dangerous and won’t it kill me or my kid?” The quick answer is no it won’t. Yes, borax has brought out some ‘strong’ opinions in the Slime Community, but I’ve been using this borax recipe with my little one for 5 years and she’s still not broken and making slime is such an amazing science activity for kids (and grown ups)!

Joking aside, please do use your common sense. DO NOT let your kids eat it and always wash hands after playing. If you want a borax free slime recipe, there are loads of them out there and I’m sure you don’t need me to find a link for you!

So here is the basic Recipe from my memory:
100m clear school glue
100ml of warm water
½ tsp borax
100ml hot water

For Spaceman Galaxy Slime Add:
Purple & Blue Food Colouring
Gold, Purple & Black Glitter

The basic recipe is great but I find it easier amending the recipe to the size of the bottle I'm using at the time ie if using a 75ml glue bottle, I fill the empty bottle with 75ml warm water, then 75ml hot water. Added bonus - reusing the glue bottle as the measuring cup saves on cleanup afterwards

Today I used 2 x 55ml bottles of clear glue. Empty the glue into a bowl, fill the empty bottle(s) with warm tap water and add to the glue and mix

Fill the clean glue bottle(s ) with hot tap water, empty into a cup and add ½ tsp borax and mix.

Add your food colour & glitter and mix

Slowly add the borax & water to the glue mixing until you have slime consistency your happy with. We then added our glow in the dark moons and stars.

Self-Directed Learning Focus: Space
For all our other Space related Self-Directed Learning activities, I’ll (hopefully) put those in another post, but 2 activities I do want to mention are:-
Learning the names of the Planets in our Solar System by singing along to one of our favourite songs by Have Fun Teaching songs

And building & launching rockets on our Kerbal Space Program https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/en

So my 3rd post turned out to be about one of our #SelfDirectedLearning activities. Again, not the one I planned but If I haven't mentioned it yet, I am a @homeschooling mum and I plan to @steem about many of our activities. I also plan to write a post about Self-Directed Learning and some ramblings on education. So fellow Steamians if your interested in anything else I may have to share please follow me (and maybe resteem me) but in the meantime have fun playing with our Spaceman Galaxy Slime!

Looks like great fun thank you I'm gonna enjoy this one day...dunno if my daughter is invited or not yet! :)

She'll love it as it's also as pliable as playdough!
