Este desciende del apareamiento de pastores ovejeros negros y de pelo largo. Su función también es la de pastoreo pero se han encontrado en la actualidad cualidades excelentes para ser un magnífico guardián doméstico. Cuando uno observa a un Pastor Belga lo primero que se detecta es un perro bien balanceado, cuadrado, elegante, con un porte orgulloso. Es un perro fuerte y ágil, lleno de vida. Sus características hacen que se distingan fácilmente las hembras de los machos por su estructura.
