For the disciples, the arrival of the Holy Spirit at the celebration of Pentecost in Jerusalem was the fulfillment of a long-awaited promise, as Jesus said to them: "For everyone will be tested with fire" Mark 9:49. The spirit of wisdom descended in tongues of fire upon the disciples and granted them the spiritual gifts of wisdom, understanding, and spiritual discernment so that they could begin to carry out the mission for which they had been chosen by Jesus: to bring about the Kingdom of God, the dominion or government of the divine perfections, in human society. After Pentecost, the disciples were able to understand all of Jesus' teachings, particularly the parables that seemed so mysterious. And so, the disciples, joyful to have received that hidden treasure announced by Jesus, went out to make known the mysteries of the Kingdom to the simple and humble people.
And the Book of Acts relates that it was the disciple Peter who was the first to bear witness, with his first speech, because the arrival of the Holy Spirit was so strong that it drew the attention of the people throughout the city of Jerusalem. Many of the people who approached were devout Jews who came from other nations and heard the disciples speaking in different languages, and so, amazed, they wondered what had happened. Peter, filled with the spirit, took advantage of the situation and addressed the crowd and spoke to them about the Lord Jesus with these words: "This Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it" Acts 2:23-24.
The Book of Acts recounts that many God-fearing people were baptized and converted by Peter's speech and the testimony of the disciples. These were the first conversions after the Lord's resurrection. Peter's speech confirmed his leadership, and in this way, he became, along with the apostle Paul, one of the most important figures in the early Church.
