Spiritual wisdom: Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools. Ecclesiastes 5:1
The Book of Ecclesiastes, attributed to King Solomon, teaches a brief statement on how God should be worshipped, and it does so with these words: "Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil" Ecclesiastes 5:1.
This teaching has a very clear spiritual meaning; we must remember that the law of Moses, as set forth in the Book of Deuteronomy, chapter five, has its first two commandments referring to the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity). God must be feared above all things, summarizes the law of Moses, and this is what the Book of Ecclesiastes with wisdom also expresses in some way, and it especially affirms something else, the believer who approaches the house of God must be willing to listen, the book teaches, that is, be willing with his heart to receive the wisdom, the instruction that comes from the law of the Lord. Or in other words, God loves those who are devoted to wisdom and recognizes them as his children.
And then the phrase continues and condemns the appearances of fools; sacrifices without a willing heart do not please God, as the Book of Ecclesiastes states; and this bears a resemblance to a teaching of the prophet Hosea: "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings" Hosea 6:6. God judges hearts, intentions, and the way of discerning, says the sapiential book.
The sapiential books like Ecclesiastes ultimately provide common-sense phrases to inspire and encourage reflection in readers. Wisdom is not meant to create fear or prohibit things, but to build and suggest the best solutions to problems, that is why the Book of Ecclesiastes, with this phrase of wisdom, tells us in a way, that when we approach what is holy, what we must do is guard our thoughts, words, and actions, in order to reap blessings.
