Spirituality in the Bible: If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be! Deuteronomy 32:29
The life of the prophet Moses, as recounted in the Book of Deuteronomy, concluded shortly after he recited a poem known as the Song of Moses. During the last years of his life, Moses wondered what would become of Israel in the times to come, and it was then that God inspired him to warn, educate, and teach, and as a result, Moses left this beautiful and inspiring text. This poem encapsulates the central problem of spirituality in the Bible, the sinful nature of man clashes with the perfection of God, who has a plan of salvation for all humanity.
The song begins by describing how God is perfect and wise:
"He is the Rock, his works are perfect,
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong,
upright and just is he" Deuteronomy 32:4.
The Bible presents God as the source of all good, but man is free, and he is also guided by his own reason, which often deceives man and makes him see apparent goods as the most desirable, sin is thus presented as something undesirable but inevitable. The wisdom to live, which is an intangible good so necessary for blessedness, appears to be something very scarce in man, to such an extent that Moses expressed in his song:
"They are a nation without sense,
there is no discernment in them.
If only they were wise and would understand this
and discern what their end will be" Deuteronomy 32:28-29.
But God is patient and provident in the face of man's imperfection, this is why the song does not show a God given over to passions but a God willing to forgive when man finds and returns to the right path, the path of righteousness. This is why the song ends by proclaiming the purification of the nation of Israel and that only God should be feared, not men. The song is ultimately a poem that makes men reflect; the love of money is idolatry, and men should yearn for wisdom to receive God's blessing and forgiveness, this is the spiritual message of the poem.
