Laurent Koscielny Threatened Absent at World Cup 2018
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits captain Laurent Koscielny is likely to miss the 2018 World Cup after allegedly suffering an Achilles injury when the Gunners lost 1-0 in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final at Wanda Metropolitano on Friday (4/5).
Los Rojiblancos scored a single goal Diego Costa at the end of the first half. Arsenal also must be eliminated from the Europa League semi-finals for losing 2-1 on aggregate.
Koscielny had to be pulled off the pitch with a stretcher when the game was running 11 minutes after suffering a very serious injury. The French national midfielder's defender could not continue the match and his position was replaced by Calum Chambers.
Although Koscielny has not had a scan, the initial prognosis indicates that the player's injury is not good. Wenger is worried that the defender will miss the World Cup with an Achilles injury, which usually requires a six-month recovery.
"[The injury] did not look very good," Wenger told a news conference after the match.
"His Achilles ... You can always expect miracles on the scans he's going to take, but the first sign if they do not look very good."
"I need to be a little cautious [about the confirmation] because nobody will say without seeing it clinically."
