3D Archery competition

in #sports8 years ago

Last weekend, we went to a 3D archery competition. Here's more about the sport and our day.

3D archery is where you shoot at 3D fake animals at various ranges. You generally don't know the range of the animal, so you'll have to estimate that and adjust your shot accordingly. These contests are mostly held in woods, where people lay out a trail to follow and shoot the various animals you encounter.

This was my very first competition and I didn't take my bow with me for this one. I wanted to see what it was all about and I wanted to check out how far away the animals would generally be. My bow isn't very strong (because I'm not very strong), so long ranges are too hard for me.

I also wanted to check out how far we would have to walk on such a day. I think we spend about 7 hours on the competition. Most was spend outside in the woods with two small breaks at the club house.

We woke up early that day and drove to the contest area. We all gathered up at the club house, where we heard what target we would start at. Then, we walked to the starting target.

Our group was me, my boyfriend, his father, two of his father's friends who practice here a lot and two of his father's aquiantances. The six of them were all competing. Two with compound bows and four with recurve bows.

This poor fox would have to endure a lot of arrows that day.

There are quite a lot of different targets, but all are fake animals. Foxes, deers, badgers, bears, cougars, but also snakes, birds, etc. They are all in various sizes and usually, the bigger the size, the further away the animal.

The circle in the middle (where you see most arrow holes) is the 'killzone'. Hitting the animal there will give you the most points, as this is where the vital organs generally are and it would most likely be a killshot. You usually get three shots, where the first hit counts and gives you the most points (a regular hit gives less points than a killshot). There were a couple of 'Hunter' targets, which is where you only get one shot.

I felt quite sad for this little guy! It was way too cute to shoot!

Most targets stand still, but there were also a few moving targets. The hardest one was a bird that would swing ('fly') past. It was the fastest moving target in the contest.

Seeing as it's all taking place inside a forest, the surrounds are pretty nice! The mud, however, is less nice. Luckily, my boyfriend's father had already advised us to wear boots.

My boyfriend did really well in this competition and he hit most targets with his first shot! The other guys did the same, but hey, they've been doing this for years!

After we hit all targets, my boyfriend and me drove back home while the others waited for the end of the competition. My boyfriend's father brough home the first price again.

I have to say, I managed to keep myself going in the woods quite well! I wasn't sure how tired I would get, but I only got tired at the end. It was very cold though, so I was really happy I didn't compete. This way, I could wear my big gloves all the time!

Around easter, we'll go to a competition in the Ardennes and I'll bring my bow for that one. I hope the weather will be better by then and I want to train some more before that. I'm looking forward to it!

I always had this fantasy that I was a bow wielding elf in battle. Hmm that would have been a close experience for me. Whoever created this playground is a genius :)

Oh yes definitely! Well you could always take up archery if you want to make this fantasy a close reality :D

It's very expensive here in our country since it's not a common sport. It's only for the elite.
We can DIY but the good stuff is out of reach for commoners like me. :)

Aww that's a shame! Maybe one day you'll be able to buy it from your Steemit earnings :D

That looks fun! More fun if it weren't cold, perhaps, but still fun.

Are there any video archery places near you? There were some in Wisconsin, but I never went. Apparently, you change out your arrow tips and shoot at a huge video screen.

Yeah exactly, less cold would have been better, but luckily, there are more contests during summer :D

Oh really? I'm not sure if there are actually. Never heard them talk about that on the club or with the 3D archery.

How many arrows did you break in the attempt @playfulfoodie? Hahaha is a joke, there is nothing better than a healthy competition between friends :)

Haha, well I didn't join the competition this time. My boyfriend lost one arrow. Whenever I practice though, I tend to break an arrow or two! My boyfriend's dad got me an extra set just because of that ;-)

thats a pretty long competition! and his dad must be pretty good if he keeps winning 😄

Pretty long indeed! Apparently, all 3D archery competitions are this long.
Yeah, my boyfriend's dad is a really good 3D archer. He's been doing it for a long time aswell and joins national and international competitions. He wins many prices (not all first). Went to Italy last year for... European Competition I think it was and he'll go for that again this year :-)

That's cool. I didn't even know there were such competitions. I always imagined just shooting a boring circular target. This sounds much more interesting. One semester I went to archery, and I enjoyed it. One would also do it in free time, but bows are not cheap :D

I always imagined just shooting a boring circular target.

Oh yes, me too! And that's what we started with when we joined an archery club. My boyfriend's father does 3D archery though and he has has a little area set up on his land for practice, so we can do both 3D practice and the set distances practice in our backyard! There are clubs dedicated to both forms here in the Netherlands and there are contests for both aswell, both nationally and internationally :-)

Bows aren't cheap indeed, though there are some very well priced ones on the market. Mine was less than 100 euros and that's with its own case and a couple of arrows too!

100 euros only?! I was probably looking at some fancy bow shop...

That's great that you can also practice at home. If I wanted to start with archery, I would have to go to a club as well, because I live in a housing estate. Well, there is a park, but it would seem strange if I shoot near people :D

It's a fact that I didn't even search for what type of archery competitions exists. So I'm smarter now! 3D archery looks useful if some survival struggle ever happened :D

Yeah it could really be useful for survival indeed! Though for now, it's just fun to do :D

Maybe you did check out a fancy bow shop. The compound bows are pretty expensive either way, but recurve bows don't have to be too expensive.

looking like a hunter

@playfulfoodie congrt for the price first and secondly, this is one thing we should do at least once in a blue moon to keep a family unique. Nice outing and weldon

This is so lovely am gonna try this very soon

Really? Well in that case, I wish you a lot of fun!
