Ultimate Frisbee In Oklahoma - Awesome Tournament Two Years in a Row
Hey guys among all of the video games i play i also play ultimate frisbee.
Here below are two videos of game play in the past at a tournament called brews and bruises. Now the tournament location varies depending on the coordinator but this is an annual tournament that is typically hosted by OSU's college team. I was fortunate enough to be able to get some first hand footage of these events in 2015 and 2016. I hope you enjoy these videos and i will explain a little bit about ultimate frisbee below so you're not completely lost watching these videos as ultimate frisbee is still a relatively new sport.
2015 - Brews and Bruises - Pool Play
2016 - Brews and Bruises - Pool Play/Finals
Ultimate frisbee is a non-contact fast paced soccerlike sport that incorporates rules from several different base sports.
Such as Basketball, Football and Soccer.
Now that may seem a little bit far fetched. But let me explain. - First and foremost this is a player driven sport and it is not necessary to have referees as such, so that is the main difference between frisbee and other sports.
So the objective of this sport is to catch the disc(Frisbee) inside an end zone. Similar to how in football a player must pass over into the end zone in order to score however ultimate frisbee is a non-contact sport meaning there are rules set it play that inhibit a players ability to contact another player during a game. A frisbee player must catch the disc inside the designated end zone and establish a pivot foot inside that end zone. At the point a disc is caught inside that space it is considered a score and the losing team walks to the other side of the field and then the disc is thrown from the scoring team to the scored on team.
Secondly, there are only allowed to be 7 players from each team present on the field at any given time. Along side the number count subbing (or the removal of one player for the exchange of another) can only be done in the time between points. (Meaning when a team scores the time it takes for the opposing team to make their way to the other side of the field is when a person can be subbed onto the field for either team) Along side that there is a sub rule or a bylaw of the sport that states that if a player is injured on the field and calls out that he/she has an injury both teams then have an opportunity to sub players onto the field at that time(it is not limited to the just the player that is injured).
Thirdly, when a player catches the frisbee he/she has a limited stride count of 3 in order to establish a pivot foot. If the person exceeds that number, it is then considered to be a travel. Another instance of a travel is in regards to an already established pivot foot. If the player with the frisbee lifts that pivot foot off the ground at any time during the throw it is also considered a travel. A travel results in a reset of the frisbee and a stoppage of play momentarily. However if a travel is called while the disc is in the air then the disc must be caught by the team throwing the frisbee in order for the play to go back to the travel call. (Meaning if the disc is dropped during the travel call the play will resume the call is nullified and the opposing team then gains possession of the disc at that point.
Lastly, any time a player catches the disc, and an opposing team member is within 10 feet of that player and must remain within that 10 foot boundary he/she is allowed to initiate and continue what is referred to as a stall count. This stall count can be taken up to a count of 10 and if does so results in a transference of possession to the defending team. The stall count is initiated by stating the word "stalling" proceeded by the number 1 and must be announced out loud so that atleast 1 other player on the field can hear the count. And then the time between stall counts must be enough to state the word stalling in between each number but isn't required to be stated out loud. However each number from 1 to 9 must be stated loud enough for atleast 1 other person on the field to hear. At the point the person stalling reaches the T in the number 10 in his/her statement. The result is a turnover and and immediate possession change to the defending team.
This is a very condensed version of the rules of ultimate frisbee but it will definitely get you started, and help you understand a little bit of what is going on in the video. I hope you enjoy and if you have any questions about how to get involved in frisbee with your community let me know i'm sure i can atleast point you in the right direction.
