Breaking the Game #2: Australia 31, American Samoa 0
The American Samoan national football team had never participated in the World Cup prior to 2002. Their first national team match as a member of FIFA occurred in 1998. At the time, they were tied for the worst team in national team football. Why did anyone think that a round-robin with Australia involved make any sense? Perhaps, it was because a massacre this brutal had never occurred before. The ramifications of this game would change the Oceanic Football Confederation forever.

Australia scored so much, they lost track of the score.
The Matchup
Both teams are competing to get a spot in the 2002 World Cup. Australia had won their first game, beating Tonga 22-0. Tonga like American Samoa is a small island nation in the South Pacific. American Samoa had lost their first two games. They lost to Fiji 13-0 and Samoa 8-0. It was very clear that they were not a good team. Losing to Samoa by eight goals is a very good indication of that.
But let us create a comparison for comparison's sake. This is like a men's high school soccer club facing the Australian National Team. We had a group of amateurs facing people who played the game professionally. The odds are not looking too good.
The Big Game
After 9 minutes, the game was still tied at 0-0. Given the score of the game and the magnitude of the difference of the two teams, we can consider this a miracle. By the time we reached the 15th minute, the score of the game was 4-0. Australia had scored 4 goals in five minutes. At this point, American Samoa needed to play defensively and control any damage. For honor or something like that.
Fifteen minutes later, more damage had been done. Archie Thompson had scored a hat trick since the last time we checked in and had a total of four goals for the game. Five different players have scored in the game. The score was 11-0. The game had been over for quite sometime. Honestly, American Samoa should have forfeited the game beforehand. They would have been given a respectable 3-0 loss.
At the end of the first half, American Samoa had failed to score any goals. Not much of a surprise. They had not scored a single goal in two and half games of World Cup qualification. Archie Thompson had scored another four goals since the last time we checked the score. For anyone scoring at home, he had eight goals to himself in a single half. The score was 16-0. That is one goal every three minutes. Considering the time taken to reset everything after a goal is scored, American Samoa appeared not to know how to play defense. And we still had an entire half to go.
Australia started the second half quickly. By the 60th minute, the score was 22-0. Archie Thompson had just gotten his tenth goal. That is one goal per every six minutes by a single player. Maybe American Samoa should have payed a little more attention to this guy. Luckily, Australia decided to slow down and only scored nine more goals for the rest of the game. Considering they were on pace for eleven more goals, American Samoa should give themselves a pat on the back, they survived. The game is over. 31 goals were scored. Poor goalkeeper.
Australia set new records for national team association football. They scored the most goals in a game. Archie Thompson set the most goals by a single player with 13 total.
The Aftermath
American Samoa would finish their World Cup qualifying campaign with zero goals. They were outscored by 58 goals in the four games they played. Australia won every single game and conceded zero goals in qualifying. Although, Fiji played them to a respectable 2-0 loss.
Australia would move to the Asian Football Confederation in order to improve their odds of qualifying as Oceania only had 1/2 of a spot versus the 4 1/2 that the AFC has. The level of competition also played a role in their decision to move. The games are now slightly more competitive in the OFC, with New Zealand dominating.
American Samoa has still not qualified for the FIFA World Cup. They did win their first FIFA World Cup qualifying match in 2014. They beat Tonga 2-1. They are no longer regularly dominated as the OFC restructured their qualifying process to prevent the bottom feeders from immediately playing the best teams in the group.
That match really shows how preparation, structure, and confidence can completely dominate a sporting contest, especially when one side executes its game plan flawlessly from the first minute. Performances like this highlight why sports fans love analyzing statistics, tactics, and momentum shifts long after the final whistle. While following discussions around international football results and fan reactions, I came across Ricky Casino which positions itself as a platform that understands how deeply people connect with sports on an emotional and analytical level. When that passion for results and performance is combined with interactive entertainment, betting and casino experiences naturally become an extension of how fans engage with the game.
