SSI Is Stealing Our Daughter's Money
I'm only posting this because I'm pissed and need to get it off my chest. Our middle daughter is Autistic and on SSI. On January 3rd we got a letter from SSI telling us they were reducing her SSI by 1/3 ($250) starting with her February benefits. Now it is bad enough that the federal government expects those of us on SSI to live off a measly $750 a month (less then federal inmates make), but, to then randomly take away 1/3 of it with no reason is BS. In that letter it said we had 10 days after receiving it to file an appeal and freeze the changes. So as far as the law goes, as long as we filed an appeal in writing before January 14th there were to be no changes made to her SSI till after that appeal was decided. Her mother and I went into the local SSI office at 4340 N Simmons St, North Las Vegas, NV 89032 on January 11th. After waiting for almost 4 hours we filed the appeal and have a date stamped copy of it. We also confirmed with the worker that by filing this appeal her benefits would not change prior to the appeal being decided. Well when we got her February benefits they are only for $500. When we called the local SSI office at 4340 N Simmons St, North Las Vegas, NV 89032 we were told by Mat that "We have not even put the appeal into the computer system yet, are you sure your filed one?" WTF! These people think it is just a joke to mess with disabled peoples income source. I am disabled myself. Our family barley makes it month to month and know somehow we have to do it with $250 less because some jerk who holds power over our money thought it would be funny to just lose a federal SSI appeal!
