StarCraft was never just a setting
StarCraft was never just a setting.
It was a verb: command from above. Economy. Build orders. Three-race asymmetry. Maps as problems. You were the commander, not the marine.
Blizzard just announced an open-world shooter, set 70 years later, due in 2030, and put the word STARCRAFT on it. That is not the next StarCraft. That is a Far Cry-shaped shooter that licensed the furniture.
They already tried this. Ghost died. Ares died. Now they take the flagship name so the announcement sounds like a homecoming instead of a genre swap.
If the universe is rich enough, it can support a shooter. Fine. Call it that. Don’t tell people the RTS is “back” when the thing that made the name mean something is the part they left on the floor.
IP is not the game. The game is the game.
Disappointed. Not confused.
