Greetings everyone,

(How Samanala Mountain looks from a distance)

I hope you are all well. Today I am going to share with you about another beautiful place in our country, Sri Padasthan or Samanala Mountain or Adam's Peak. On the 20th, our family went on a three-day pilgrimage, and we reserved the first two days for worship Sri Padasthan. There were 33 of us in total, including the young children. So we left home early in the morning because we wanted to start our journey before evening to visit Sri Padasthan.

This video shows both sides of the road on our way to Sri Pada Mountain.

About the Sri Padasthan or Samanala Mountain

Sripada Kanda or Samanala Mountain is a Sinhala Buddhist religious site located in the Central Highlands of the Ratnapura District of the Sabaragamuwa Province. It is about 2243 meters high and is one of the highest mountains in Sri Lanka. Sripada is a sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists. That is, the left foot print of Gautama Buddha is at Sripada.
At that time, when the Buddha came to Sri Lanka from India, at the invitation of God Sumana Saman, the Buddha placed the Buddha's feet on the top of the Samanala Mountain.

So, we climb Samanala mountain to worship that foot print of the Buddha. The area around this Sripada Kanda is surrounded by large mountain ranges. In addition, there are waterfalls, small canals. The entire mountain is covered with large and small trees. You can clearly see the scenery here from the pictures and videos I have shared below. In addition, this mountain is home to wild boars, tigers, bears, and other endemic species. However, these animals do not harm the pilgrims.

Ways to reach Sri Pada Mountain

There are several routes to reach the top of Samanala Mountain. Whichever route you choose, you will have to climb the mountain on foot. This will require you to climb thousands of steps and the distance to the top will vary depending on the route you choose. Below are the main routes that can be used to reach the top of Sri Pada Mountain.

Hatton Road - This is the most popular route used by many people and it is easy to climb the mountain as this road has steps.

(This is the staircase leading up to Sri Pada from Hatton Road. All the pictures I have included here were taken while visiting Sri Pada via Hatton Road.)

Ratnapura Route - A fairly difficult route that requires a long journey, and like the Hatton route, many people choose this route.

Kuruwita Road - A challenging road. Traveling is very difficult.

Muriyawatta, Mookuwatta and Malimboda routes - Are so difficult that they are not used by pilgrims.

Among these routes, the most commonly used routes by pilgrims are the Hatton route and the Ratnapura route. To reach the top of Sri Pada via the Hatton route, you have to climb about 6,000 steps, while if you choose the Ratnapura route, you have to climb almost 10,000 steps.

Why do pilgrims come to worship at Sri Pada?

As I mentioned above, Sri Padasthan is a sacred religious place for Buddhists. Buddhists climb the mountain with great effort to worship the Buddha's feet at the top of the mountain. In addition, Tamils, Muslims and foreigners also come to worship Sri Padasthan. Pilgrims are not allowed to go to Sri Padasthan every day. There is a time set aside for that. The pilgrimage season begins with the full moon in December and ends with the full moon of Vesak in May. Other times are the "off season" when it is not allowed to worship Sri Padasthan.

While climbing Sri Pada Mountain, boards indicating the number of steps are seen at several places.

There are various religious and traditional rituals associated with climbing Sripada Mountain, and the first-time pilgrim is called the "Kodukaraya". Before climbing the mountain, he or she must bathe in a stream called "Seetha Gangula". Seetha Gangula is the river that flows through Sripada Mountain. The water of this river is very cold, so it is called Seetha Gangula. Also, pilgrims climbing the mountain for the first time fix needles and threads at a place called "Indikatupana". This place called Indikatupana is found after climbing about half of Samanala Mountain. While climbing mountain, devotees sing various folk poems to relieve their fatigue. Anyway, after climbing the mountain, they ring the bell there according to the number of times they have visited Sripada. But many pilgrims climb about half of the Sri Pada mountain, are unable to climb the rest, and turn back.

My experiences of worshipped Sri Pada Mountain

I have now worshipped Sri Pada 9 times and I first visited Sri Pada when I was 10 years old. The last time I visited Sri Pada was on the 20th of this month and it was my 9th pilgrimage. I have climbed Sri Pada Kanda from the routes mentioned above only via Hatton. Although climbing Sri Pada Kanda was difficult for me in the first few times, now it is not difficult for me.

This picture shows the last few steps to the top of the Sri Pada.

This time it took me about 9 hours to climb and descend Sri Pada. After we had lunch, we took a bath in Seetha Gagula and started climbing Sri Pada at around 4 pm. It was around 8 pm when we reached the top of the mountain. And it was around 1 am when we finished descending the mountain. But it took my younger brothers only 5 hours to climb and descend Sri Pada. They climbed and descended the mountain quickly. The time taken to climb the mountain varies depending on the pace of each pilgrim. Also, there are various food stalls on both sides of the stairs from where we can buy the things we need.

(These two videos show a view of the upper courtyard of Sri Padasthan. The upper courtyard is very cold and covered in fog.)

You can climb Sri Pada Mountain at any time of the day, but the best time is in the evening. Because the intense heat of the afternoon and morning makes it difficult to climb the mountain. The best time to climb the mountain is in the evening or at night.
