History is full of leaders whose strategies continue to inspire people even centuries later. One of those remarkable figures is Mehmed the Conqueror, also known as Sultan Muhammad Fatih. His intelligence and strategic thinking made him one of the most famous military leaders in world history.
In 1453, he achieved something that changed the course of history when he laid siege to Constantinople. At that time, the city was heavily fortified and considered almost impossible to conquer.
One of the biggest defensive barriers protecting the city was at the harbor known as Golden Horn. The Byzantine defenders had placed a massive iron chain across the entrance of the harbor to prevent enemy ships from entering.
Normally, an army facing such an obstacle would either try to break it by force or retreat. But Mehmed II chose a completely different path.
Instead of trying to destroy the chain, he ordered his navy to move the ships over land. Ottoman soldiers placed wooden planks along the route and covered them with oil and grease so the ships could slide more easily. During the night, soldiers and animals slowly pulled the ships across the hills and down into the Golden Horn.
It is said that nearly seventy Ottoman ships were transported this way. When the Byzantine defenders woke up the next morning, they were shocked to see Ottoman ships already inside the harbor.
This unexpected strategy weakened the city’s defenses and eventually led to the historic Fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453.
A Historical Perspective on Today’s World
Recently, while reading discussions about tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, this historical example came to my mind.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important maritime routes in the world. A significant portion of global oil trade passes through this narrow waterway every single day. If this route were ever blocked or disrupted, it could seriously affect global energy supply and international trade.
In today’s world, political and military tensions sometimes raise concerns about the stability of such critical trade routes.
This is where history offers an interesting lesson.
Mehmed the Conqueror’s strategy teaches us that when one path becomes blocked, a creative leader looks for alternative routes instead of confronting the obstacle directly.
He did not spend all his efforts trying to break the chain guarding the harbor. Instead, he simply found another way around it — something the defenders never expected.
From my perspective, this is one of the most powerful lessons history gives us. No matter how strong an obstacle may appear, creative thinking and strategic planning can often open new paths.
Perhaps this is why, centuries later, Mehmed the Conqueror is remembered not only as a conqueror but also as one of the most brilliant strategic minds in history.
