Even after several years here in the Land of the Rising Sun, I still have my fun. And fortunately, that feeling is constantly reaffirmed, even in such mundane places as a supermarket, where I discovered this interesting product a few days ago.

Actually, it was the name that caught my attention. OPP—or as Will Smith once said, the rap typhoon had found its way to us. Well, of course, the product in front of us had absolutely nothing to do with North American hip-hop; it was ultimately just a Japanese snack.

It is O.P.P. お魚ポリポリ “Osakana Pori Pori”—a mixture of dried fish, nuts, and possibly small shrimp or other seafood. The name “Osakana Pori Pori” roughly translates to “crunchy fish” or “fish to munch on,” with “Pori Pori” imitating the sound of crunching.

The snack is popular in Japan among both children and adults as a snack or beer accompaniment, and it is nutritious and rich in minerals. There’s also a somewhat annoying TV commercial for it, but I’ll spare us that.

However when I think of O.P.P., I also think of the Rap Typhoon and Will Smith, which is why I’ve brought along the perfect video. As I’ve said many times before, sometimes it doesn’t take much to just have a little fun.

Auch nach mehreren Jahren hier im Land der aufgehenden Sonne habe ich immer noch Spaß daran, hier zu sein. Und dieses Gefühl wird glücklicherweise immer wieder bestätigt, selbst an solch profanen Orten wie einem Supermarkt, wo ich vor ein paar Tagen dieses interessante Produkt entdeckt hatte.

Eigentlich war es der Name, der meine Aufmerksamkeit erregte. OPP - oder wie Will Smith dereinst sagte, der Rap-Taifun hatte seinen Weg zu uns gefunden. Nun ja, natürlich hatte das Produkt vor uns überhaupt nichts nordamerikanischen HipHop zu tun, sondern war letztendlich nur ein japanischen Snack.

Es handelt sich um O.P.P お魚ポリポリ "Osakana Pori Pori" – eine Mischung aus getrocknetem Fisch, Nüssen und eventuell auch kleinen Garnelen oder anderen Meeresfrüchten. Der Name „Osakana Pori Pori“ bedeutet so viel wie „Knusperfisch“ oder „Fisch zum Knabbern“, wobei „Pori Pori“ das Geräusch des Knusperns nachahmt.

Der Snacks ist in Japan bei Kindern und Erwachsenen beliebt als Zwischenmahlzeit oder Bierbegleiter und ist nahrhaft und mineralstoffreich. Es gibt dafür auch eine etwas nervende Fernsehwerbung, aber diese erspare ich uns.

Ich denke bei O.P.P. weiter an den Rap-Taifun und Will Smith, und habe uns aus diesem Grund das passende Video mitgebracht. Wie schon oft gesagt, manchmal braucht es nicht viel, um einfach mal so ein wenig Spaß zu haben.
