The last days were a little rough and bumpy even do we had quite some high hopes. But it seems we have been hit again, and somehow it feels like a repeat of previous years. Well, this time of year is particularly prone to it, as it is getting colder and more uncomfortable over here in the region of our planet as well.

As usual it started with the little ones, who were the first to show the typical symptoms. Initially, it was just a cough, but then it was followed by a fever. Even if we don't want to assume the worst, we still worry and started thinking about some possible scenarios. As mentioned, we know this situation from previous years and therefore have an idea of where it could all lead to.

And even though I've tried my best, it looks like I'm next in line. My throat feels dry and sore, and my nose is either running or completely blocked. I'm still hoping that it all will be over quickly and that the worst will pass me by this time. But since we're constantly bringing the most incredible viruses into our homes, and the season has only just begun, we probably still have a lot of fun ahead of us.

And if I can believe the stories I hear from some schools, it's going to be big fun. In one class, 22 children were reportedly absent, which I consider an exceptionally high rate given that classes have around 30 students. Here in Japan, classes are often closed for a while when the flu strikes the school, something I haven't heard of happening in western countries. And when I was at school, the flu wasn't really such a big problem – at least not that I was aware of.

The impacts have definitely come closer and reached us. And that's despite the fact that we have something big planned for the end of the month. At the moment, I'm not at all sure whether we'll be able to realize our plans or whether we'll have to abandon the whole thing in the end.

But we've seen this before in previous years, as it looked quite similar back then, although at least last year we managed to avoid the catastrophe. But two years ago we were less fortunate and ended up all lying down all together. And when I say down I really mean down, not just with a runny nose and a slight cough.

It's still too early to say how things will turn out this time. Of course, I'm trying not to take it all too seriously and to stay positive. Maybe it's even better if we all get sick right now so we can get it over with quickly. But ultimately, I don't know if I'm on the right track with that. Of course it would be better if we were spared the spell this year and were able to relax and concentrate on what we have planned for the end of the month. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that will relax any time soon, so all I can do is keep my fingers crossed that things will look a little better tomorrow.

That's why I'll leave feeling pessimistic to others and just enjoy the sunshine which is coming through the window right now. Whatever happens in the next few days, it's definitely going to be exciting....
