As everyone should be aware by now, the new year has begun. 2026 is still new and fresh, and many of us are thinking about what we want to do this year. Fortunately, we don't have to start stressing out right away, but luckily we still have some time before we really have to get started.
By the way, 2026 is the Year of the Horse 午年 (uma-doshi). In Japanese culture, which is strongly influenced by the Chinese zodiac, the horse is one of the twelve animal signs (Jūnishi, 十二支) that rotate in a twelve-year cycle. Each animal represents not only a year, but also certain character traits, moods, and cultural associations.
In Japan, as in China, the horse symbolizes freedom, speed, strength, and the joy of life. It is considered an animal that is not easily caught – full of energy, but also with a certain tendency towards restlessness. People born in the Year of the Horse are said to be:
independent and freedom-loving,
communicative and popular, and
often determined, but sometimes impatient or impulsive.
In ancient times, horses were considered sacred animals that could deliver messages to the gods. In some Shinto shrines, there are still ema (絵馬) – small wooden plaques with horse motifs on which visitors write their wishes.
The horse also often appears in art and literature as a symbol of strength, loyalty, and movement — for example in samurai stories or folk tales.
In rural areas of Japan, there was a time when horses were revered as work animals. This is reflected in many rituals and festivals such as the Sōma Nomaoi Festival in Fukushima, where riders in armor still reenact historical battles today.
Traditionally, the Year of the Horse is considered a time when a lot of things happen — sometimes chaotic, but full of possibilities. It is a year that invites new beginnings, travel, courageous decisions, and personal growth. For those who can keep up with the pace, many doors might be open.
So let's see what the Year of the Horse has in store for us. For my part, I am extremely curious and looking forward to all the adventures, big and small, that will be waiting for us in the next twelve months....

Wie alle jetzt ja nun mitbekommen haben sollten, hat das neue Jahr begonnen. Noch ist 2026 neu und frisch, und viele von uns überlegen, was sie denn in diesem Jahr anstellen sollen. Aber wir müssen zum Glück nicht sofort anfangen, uns zu stressen, sondern haben zum Glück noch etwas Zeit, bevor wir so richtig loslegen müssen.
2026 ist übrigens das Jahr des Pferdes 午年 (uma-doshi). In der japanischen Kultur, die sich stark am chinesischen Tierkreis orientiert, ist das Pferd eines der zwölf Tierzeichen (Jūnishi, 十二支), die im Zwölfjahreszyklus rotieren. Jedes Tier steht dabei nicht nur für ein Jahr, sondern auch für bestimmte Charakterzüge, Stimmungen und kulturelle Assoziationen.
Das Pferd symbolisiert in Japan wie auch in China Freiheit, Schnelligkeit, Stärke und Lebensfreude. Es gilt als ein Tier, das sich nicht leicht einfangen lässt – voller Tatendrang, aber auch mit einem gewissen Hang zur Unruhe. Menschen, die im Jahr des Pferdes geboren sind, sagt man nach, dass sie:
unabhängig und freiheitsliebend sind,
kommunikativ und beliebt, und
oft zielstrebig, aber manchmal auch ungeduldig oder impulsiv sind.
In alten Zeiten wurden Pferde als heilige Tiere betrachtet, die Botschaften an die Götter überbringen konnten. In manchen Shintō-Schreinen gibt es noch heute ema (絵馬) – kleine Holztafeln mit Pferdemotiven, auf denen Besucher ihre Wünsche schreiben.
Auch in der Kunst und Literatur taucht das Pferd oft als Symbol für Kraft, Loyalität und Bewegung auf – sei es in Samurai-Geschichten oder in volkstümlichen Erzählungen.
In ländlichen Regionen Japans wurden Pferde früher auch als Arbeitstiere verehrt, was sich in Ritualen und Festen widerspiegelt, etwa beim Sōma Nomaoi-Festival in Fukushima, wo Reiter in Rüstung heute noch historische Schlachten nachstellen.
Traditionell gilt das Jahr des Pferdes als eine Zeit, in der viel passiert – manchmal chaotisch, aber voller Möglichkeiten. Es ist ein Jahr, das zu Neuanfängen, Reisen, mutigen Entscheidungen und persönlichem Wachstum einlädt. Wer mit dem Tempo mithalten kann, dem stehen viele Türen offen.
Also schauen wir mal, was das Jahr des Pferdes für uns bereithalten wird. Ich für meinen Teil bin äußerst neugierig und freue mich schon auf all die kleinen und großen Abenteuer, die in den kommenden zwölf Monaten vor uns liegen....
