Mussaenda raiateensis is a tropical shrub planted for ornamental value. Flowers are tubular and small, and quite insignificant. However, they have colourful bracts which are often mistaken for petals. The eye-catching bracts help capture the attention of pollinators.

They were what first caught my attention too. I noticed the brightly coloured yellow 'petals' from afar. Out of curiosity, I had a closer look. It was only then that I realised they were not petals but what are called bracts. This is Mother Nature's way of compensating Mussaenda raiateensis for having small flowers.

Mussaenda raiateensis are perennials and thrive well in well-drained soil, and the tropical sun.
