SLC-S33/W6 | Our Surroundings: Let´s Talk About The News - How has traffic been in your region
I started at around 12.30 from my house because being a Monday, a working day after about two weeks shutdown of the highway for normal traffic due to a special function this was the first normal working day and open to all sort of vehicles.
If you mean the filed workers here managing the roads, toll and law? They work round the clock as these workers include policemen, toll plaza workers, delivery agents and of course truckers, cabbies road maintenance workers and shopkeepers. They work in shifts and get their off as per schedule.
The advantages for working on the roads is higher wages and disadvantages of the field workers is noise, pollution and the problems which are always there dealing with public. I talked to a toll plaza worker and he described in detail the problems they face during public rallies and constant pressure during long processions. one of these functions was going on in last fortnight in which 80 million people were involved.
As far my feelings, I enjoyed the situation as a traveler so adjust with all sort of situations but when face the traffic congestion it annoys me.
Now I come to the main topic of the competition and answer your questions
How would you describe the general traffic flow in your region during peak hours? Are there significant differences in traffic between weekdays and weekends?
On NH 58 which is located at man Delhi Dehradun Haridwar the traffic between the toll plaza and Dayanand Modi Academy, especially during peak hours is generally heavy, slow-moving, and irregular rather than continuously stationary. The busiest stretches are near the toll plaza, Modi Puram flyover, service-road intersections, U-turns, and the area around Modi School.
Local commuters, buses, trucks, two-wheelers, and vehicles entering or leaving Pallavpuram frequently merge into the highway traffic, reducing speed and creating short queues.
The Modi Puram flyover is a particularly sensitive point because several routes meet there, including the highway, Pallavpuram Phase 1 service road, Roorkee Road, and the CNG-pump service road. School-opening and school-closing periods can produce sudden congestion; vehicles parked for student drop-offs or pickups may block the service lane and occasionally affect the main carriageway.
Let me explain weekdays versus weekends because weekday traffic is usually more predictable even though heavier during 7:30–10:00 a.m. and 1–8:30 p.m., when office, school, commercial, and local traffic overlap. Delays are often greatest toward Meerut in the morning and around return journeys in the evening.
Weekends generally have lighter local commuting traffic, but NH 58 becoms more congested overall because of recreational and intercity traffic travelling toward Haridwar, Dehradun, and hill destinations like Mussoorie.
Sunday or holiday surges may create unusually long toll-plaza queues. I asked the toll plaza inspector personally and he told me in last two days recorded more than 60,000 vehicles both days at toll plaza.
So I can say weekends experiences heavey traffic compared to weekdays or at ordinary times, and some times worse during Friday evenings, and Sunday returns, holidays, or major religious events.
What are the conditions of the main roads in terms of maintenance and signage?
The main roads around Pallavpuram and the NH 58 corridor are generally usable, but their maintenance is uneven. The highway itself is comparatively better maintained than the adjoining service roads and internal colony roads; however, heavy traffic, monsoon water, construction activity, and repeated lane changes can produce potholes, rough patches, damaged shoulders, and dust.
As there was a big function going on in this area for the last 12 days and almost 80 millioon passed to and fro on ths road using all sort of methods but mostly on foot, and camps were set on the entire road, so this increased traffic has renewed attention to pothole filling, while drainage works are also being considered to reduce water logging.
Road maintenance and upgrades is always going on and the corridor is under continuing improvement, but construction can temporarily narrow lanes and create confusing diversions. Several accident-prone locations have also been identified along the wider NH 58 stretch, indicating the need for better junction design and traffic control.
There are enough signage present on the highway, particularly for destinations, toll facilities, major junctions, and diversions, but it may be less consistent on service roads. Some signs can be obscured by hoardings, dust, vegetation, or temporary barriers. Lane markings and reflectors may also become difficult to see at night or after rain.
Drivers should therefore reduce speed near Modi Puram, schools, U-turns, merging points, and construction zones, and rely on both road signs and local traffic directions.
What is the current state of traffic signs and traffic lights in your area?
There are proper traffic signs are present on NH 58, especially near the toll plaza, flyover, junctions, U-turns, and diversion points. However, the system is not entirely consistent. Temporary barricades, one-way arrangements, and festival-related diversions can sometimes make the normal route difficult to understand, particularly for drivers using service roads.
Recently, barricading was installed between Modi Puram flyover and the toll plaza to manage traffic flow. Traffic lights are most important at the junction beneath or near Modi Puram flyover, where four roads converge: Roorkee Road, the Pallavpuram Phase 1 service road, the CNG-pump service road, and NH 58. During heavy traffic, lights alone may not regulate movement effectively, so traffic police are reportedly deployed there to manage merging, U-turns, and lane discipline.
Overall, signs and signals are functional enough for normal travel but may be affected by dust, rain, construction, congestion, or temporary diversions. At night, extra caution is advisable because visibility and compliance can be uneven.
What types of vehicles are most prevalent on the main roads in your region?
The main roads around Pallavpuram and NH 58 carry a mixed stream of local, regional, and commercial traffic. Private cars are highly visible during office and school hours, especially near Pallavpuram, Modi Puram, and Modi School.
Motorcycles and scooters are probably the most numerous individual vehicles because residents use them for commuting, shopping, school trips, and short journeys through service roads.
Auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws are common around colony entrances, markets, bus stops, and junctions, where they frequently slow down or stop to pick up passengers. Local and intercity buses also use the highway, while school buses add concentrated traffic during opening and closing times. A reported school-time jam near Pallavpuram was worsened by parents parking vehicles on the highway and service road.
NH 58 at Pallavpuram, Modipram carries all sort of vehicles including trucks, tankers, trailers, and other heavy commercial vehicles, tractors, delivery vans, ambulances, and small goods vehicles are also seen. The combination of two-wheelers, autos, cars, buses, and heavy vehicles makes merging points and U-turns particularly unpredictable.
How would you describe the driving culture in your region? Are drivers responsible behind the wheel?
I can describe driving culture around Pallavpuram and NH 58 as mixed and highly situational. Many drivers are practical and cooperative when traffic is orderly, but lane discipline often weakens at junctions, U-turns, toll approaches, and congested service roads.
As a two-wheelers driver myself I can say the drivers may filter between lanes, autos can stop suddenly for passengers, and some cars overtake aggressively or use gaps without clear indicators. Wrong-side driving, roadside parking, signal jumping, and speeding are occasional concerns rather than isolated exceptions since they feel free coming out of strict capital rules applicable until a few kilometers behind and now on free speeding highway.
Traffic police enforcement is active and issue penalty for traffic violations. Yet repeated enforcement suggests that compliance is still inconsistent. Helmet and seat-belt use, mobile-phone discipline, and patience at crossings remain important areas for improvement.

ᴵ ʷᵃⁿᵗᵉᵈ ᵗᵒ ʳᵘⁿ ᵇᵉᶠᵒʳᵉ ˢᶜʰᵒᵒˡ ᵇᵘˢᵉˢ ʲᵃᵐᵐᵉᵈ ᵗʰᵉ ʳᵒᵃᵈˢ
Overall, drivers are not uniformly irresponsible, but defensive driving is essential. One must be careful to maintain distance, anticipate sudden lane changes, slow near schools and junctions,. I suggest if one drives in this area they must be careful and avoid assuming that other road users will follow signals or markings for sure.
Environmental impact
The environmental impact of NH 58 in Modipuram is mixed, with clear positives from improved connectivity and some negatives from land-use change and pollution.
For instance, better traffic flow and decongestion on the old highway reduced idling emissions and travel time, improving local air quality in the long run. This highway has spurred structured urban growth, supporting local businesses and formalizing land use along the highway.
Use of treated solid waste in expressway construction nearby shows potential for recycling waste into infrastructure, reducing landfill burden.
But there are negative impacts as well like rapid built-up expansion along the Delhi–Dehradun- Mussorie corridor has replaced agricultural and barren land by reduction in vegetation and water bodies.
Construction and higher traffic volumes bring dust, noise, and gaseous emissions, plus risks of water logging if drainage is disrupted. You can see the heavy encroachment concerns on land earmarked for parks/open spaces along NH 58 near Modipuram is showing pressure on green area and local environment. So you can say its a mixed result.

Thank you for inviting me. Every day, people use the road, which usually causes traffic. Your community has a good means of transportation.
Thanks @sergeyk
Your observation on the traffic situation on the Modipuram flyover and NH-58 corridor was an opportunity to understand in depth. After reading the post, I came to know that the detailed description of the pressure created on the Modipuram station, toll plaza, and service roads on the first working day after the highway was closed for two consecutive weeks due to a major religious event brings out the real picture. In my opinion, the direct manual management of the traffic police is much more effective than regular signals at the junction of Roorkee Road, the CNG pump, and the service road under the Modipuram flyover. Especially during the school peak hours, those intersections become the most vulnerable due to the pressure of parents and long-distance vehicles. Moreover, the data of more than 60 thousand vehicles passing through the toll plaza in a few days proves that the main pressure is created due to inter-city passengers on weekends. Although there are temporary barricades and signposts on the highway, the irregular condition of the service roads and reckless overtaking are challenging for long-distance drivers. It is important to quickly repair the damage and potholes that occur on the road, especially after long religious gatherings. Your ability to observe traffic clearly shows that you are able to capture such a beautiful and accurate picture of the field within a short distance, riding your own scooter. Best wishes to you in this contest. 😊
