ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 - Drama and Drama

Hello, fellow Sports Enthusiasts,

Well, despite the political tensions and drama, the T20I World Cup 2026 started yesterday, 7th February. The tournament will be held until 8 March 2026, across five venues in India and three in Sri Lanka. We know anything is possible in the shorter format, with so much entertainment and excitement. Proving that, the first two matches of the first day almost gave us a heart attack.

So, to whom are you supporting in this edition?

• This is the 10th edition of the tournament, which began in 2007 in South Africa. India became the first champion, defeating Pakistan, and they are the defending champions as well.

• Just like the last, there are 20 teams in the competition.

• We know India and Pakistan have a long political conflict, but recently it has developed further. Even in 2023, Pakistan traveled to India for the ODI World Cup. But in the 2025 Asia Cup, India refused to travel to Pakistan, and no-hanshake incident got the attention. So, Pakistan was not willing to play in India from the start, so their matches have been shifted to Sri Lanka.

But things got escalated with Bangladesh coming into action. For security reasons, Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman was released by the Kolkata Knight Riders from the 2026 Indian Premier League squad on 3 January 2026, even after the auction. With that, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested from ICC to reschedule their matches from India. But ICC rejected their request, and Bangladesh decided to boycott the tournament. So, Scotland got the chance.

And right now, sometimes India, Pakistan clash also may not be held as well.

• Altogether, there will be 55 matches in different rounds. In the Group stage, there are 4 subgroups as below, where all the teams will face one another for 40 matches. And the top two from each will be advanced to the Super 8.

• There will be two groups in the Super 8, where the teams have already been aleady decided from a pre-decided seeding:

Group 1 - Australia, India, South Africa, and the West Indies
Group 2 - England, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka

If any other team is selected from the respective group, they will be replaced accordingly.

• Then there will be the semi-finals and the finals.

• As I said, there will be eight venues: the MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chennai), Arun Jaitley Stadium (New Delhi), Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai), Eden Gardens (Kolkata), Narendra Modi Stadium (Ahmedabad), R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo), Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground (Colombo) and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium (Kandy).

• About the prize money, ICC has not yet decided.

• On the first day, there were three matches between Pakistan and the Netherlands, India, the USA, and the West Indies and Netherland. Pakistan and India's matches almost gave heart attacks, where the underdogs almost pulled off the win. But their drop catches hurt them. West Indies won the match comfortably.
