My Holy Week Traditions

Holy Week has always felt like such a peaceful and reverent week. With all of life's ordinary, everyday madness packed into such a crucial week of the year, Holy Week always seems so distinct. Slow and peaceful and meaningful. I think I will always experience Holy Week not only as a religious period of time but as an important family tradition, that serves as a wake-up call to truly focus on what the period represents-sacrifice, reflection, hope.
Palm Sunday is almost always the anchor in Holy Week.

heading to church with my family carrying my palm fronds which we now keep in our homes as symbols of peace and blessing. I always feel wonderful to have so many people together with common cause and purpose and so we mark the start of Holy Week.

Throughout Holy Week, I always endeavor to be a little more patient, kinder and more mindful; to reduce the noise, social media and to embrace these quiet moments and to reflect. I sometimes find that I like to listen to messages or read passages to help me understand what this particular time is all about.

Good Friday is a day of immense reflection within our family. There is quiet, remembering and an absence of activity and these feelings are shared together so we can remember the sacrifice and the love. We often have a service or share our thoughts in our home. It is a deep and important day of reflection.

Easter Sunday represents a time of new life and excitement. Once Holy Week has passed then the celebrations may truly begin; happiness, renewal and the end of all restriction will be present throughout the home.

There will be more colorful clothing and we will once again be going to church to share together our special day. We all share a feast together at home and then can enjoy each other with lots of laughter.

I think that my Holy Week traditions may be fairly simple, but the are how I see life and they teach me that I need to sit back and appreciate things such as sacrifice and joy, they keep my grounded and remind me what really is important.
