Because it's not a direct donation, far from it. It's a chance, as you might get this much reward, because it's a game, because it encourages content creation, because it doesn't discourage people to consume, because it doesn't cost anyone mental energy to consider costs / rewards, because it offers people a chance to consider how much each item is worth.
