It depends on the meaning of deletion.

They can wipe out accounts on Steemit.com which is an interface and a centralized point to browse the blockchain.

However, they can't delete accounts from the blockchain. (Unless there is a hard fork involved and the consensus witnesses accept that fork.)

That's why other interfaces work alright for that particular account.
