100% VP Ruins My Growth So I Have Made Some Changes.

"No More 100% VP!"

We all know how the rewards have changed with HF21. Instead of the previous 75/25 split between authors and curators, we have the "infamous" 50/50 split. On top of that, we have also seen how people have stopped voting on comments, as most of those upvotes turns into dust. Dust is not good, and like some people are allergic to dust in real life, many Steemians out there have become allergic to dust on the blockchain as well.

The results are simply put that authors earns less for their content and contributions, and curators earns more. We hope that these changes will increase manual curation and that good content creators will eventually earn more, as this ultimately would give these authors upvotes from more users.

I can totally see why passive or inactive users would remain passive though, as they could easily make some minor changes on steemauto and earn more than before... But this isn't about that.

This is about my voting power and how I basically allows my VP to idle, which obviously leads to less curation rewards which also affects my overall growth.

I have never really cared much about curation rewards in the past, because truth is, that I have never cared much about rewards of 0.007 SP and whatever I've managed to earn. It has always been far more lucrative to publish content and to aim for a handful of upvotes on some comments instead, so curation rewards have never been anything I have cared about. I have been rewarding users because I've tried to give them something extra for their contributions. No matter the stake I have had. I have always had that mindset. To give others something.

I have upvoted comments on my own articles for the same reasons, but also in an attempt to show my appreciation. To show my audience that I am grateful. I have used my upvotes as a "token of appreciation", but I am likely to change my behaviour.

I recently spent about 30 minutes with Steemauto to add users, change voting times and percentages, because I don't want my voting power to sit at 100%. I am perfectly fine with having 100% for a short amount of time, but I have recently been sitting at 100% VP for several hours, and that is just a pure waste of vp, and ultimately a stupid way to ruin my own growth.

I am not really sure how I should vote, at what time and with what percentages I should vote to maximize my curation rewards, so it's a learning curve... But the most important part is that I don't sit with 100% VP for several hours, as that will affect my overall growth.

  • Have you changed your voting habits?
  • Will you change them?

The key is to find a good balance, so I can reward multiple users without spending too much VP, but also use enough VP so I never really hit 100% again. I could obviously just follow other curators, so I vote on whatever content they vote on, but I don't want to "circle-jerk" like that. I want to reward users I personally like, and content I personally enjoy, so following others is not optimal for me.

The main reason for me to think about curation rewards nowadays is due to the simple fact that my author rewards are likely to decrease and I basically want to compensate. It's not about me being entitled to rewards, it's about making the best of the situation at hand, and curation is obviously the best way to make up for the potential decreased author rewards.

  • Are you going full-auto or manual?

I am likely to go with both, but I will probably go full-auto for a few days so I can see how my recent changes to steemauto works. Especially as I plan to add more users on a regular basis too.

Sort:

I do both.
I have recently added a few steemians to
beta.steemvoter (thats buildteams auto-upvoter) and that works out good for.
I have people st 50% and 75%, currently, not to waste Vp.
But I also have smartsteem and minnowbooster sat at selling votes above 95% just in case.

I haven't been at 100% for a while, but I have been at 98%

That's cool. Since I wrote this, I seem to have to have stayed below 100%, but I'm at 99.90% right now, so a few more adjustments might be necessary, but I'll let it be right now so I can have more exact details.

Not bad. And well, you still wanna curate manually right? :D

Yeah, that's my main goal. I'll be away from home for about 12-16 hours three-six times a week for the next 4.5 weeks though, which makes this a perfect opportunity to test more or less full auto, as I won't have much spare time at all.

I need to start doing a little of both again. Recently it's been full auto while I stepped away and want to find another good site in which I can start maxing my curation rewards again from my auto vote.

However, as I get more active again I want to find a happy medium between auto and manual voting especially in the new communities that are popping up.

"especially in the new communities that are popping up."

That sounds like a really good idea.

I will stay mostly manual with no paid or self votes. I do have some auto votes that follow my @tenkminnow account to just get more votes to small accounts. I really don't care much what I make, but my curation rewards are up a little. The other accounts makes more on that with less SP due to voting early. My priority is to get votes where they do some good.

I am voting less on comments. What I will sometimes do is look for a post by that person to vote up and I may give them a !BEER. My VP is generally around 80% and often drops below. There's too much I want to vote on.

It will be interesting to see what you find out. Right now I'm still manually curating. But can really see the benefits of Steem auto now. But, yeah i've certainly backed off voting comments for now. 😬

I considered auto for a moment but for now I'm going with the manual option.. I upvote what I read and enjoy, if I feel a, post needs more exposure I will organically spread awareness about said post..

Basically even though it's inefficient I'm sticking to my old ways as far as voting goes on newsteem..

Okay. Yeah, I have used steemauto previously too but have mainly been manually curating. As I haven't really cared much for curation rewards in the past, and due to the recent changes, I'm about to change my behaviour though. I want to upvote stuff at the right moment in an attempt to earn decent curation rewards, as HF21 brings more focus towards curation rewards, and I figured that steemauto could help me with that.

Yea totally makes sense, go for it... I’ll stay tuned to the results post, and consider figuring out all that curation stuff... if someone delegates me a substantial amount of sp I’ll be more motivated..

I'm keeping it manual(what's on auto right now don't even make a dent in my vp) but am considering to actually try autovoting services in the future. We shall see

Alright, that's cool. Looks like a bunch of people are using auto, even though many of them still manually curates too. So it seems to be a nice mix between the two.

I started using smartsteem to avoid those 100% times (not sure what will happen now with the flag system), I put the VP at 95% for smartsteem and at 80% on steemauto, so I prioritize curating the content I normally like to consume... Even with these mechanism I can still curate manually quite often, and I normally go back and read/write a comment to the posts I auto-upvote...

There should be a way on steemauto to make it so it upvotes curation trails when the VP is to high... it would be a really good idea imho, especially now with this new curation system.

I sold a few votes too previously, to avoid 100%, but I am more interested in using steemauto to its "full potential" so to speak, rather than using another thing to decrease my vp. I have about 60 people or so on steemauto right now, with various VP%. A change from about 25 which I had prior to HF21.

That would actually be a really cool addition to steemauto.

I thought about this as I slowly started coming back onto the platform. With the current state of my account due to my delegations I didn't think it was to waste too much past 100 percent roght away however the news of HF21 and 22 changed my thought process

Yeah, for each second you're sitting at 100% VP, you'll actually lose out on some rewards, and even though this might have been the case prior to HF21 too, it definitely means more nowadays.

I have done the same and find myself surprised at being at 100% still very often. I have started to increase the weight of my manual votes to see if it helps but I think it has been a result of less activity in this early stage of the changes and given the freezes we have seen. I am actively monitoring the metrics to continue to adjust accordingly.
