I agree with you, because this is how I saw things too at first. However, with time, I have started to think that engagement is still as important as ever before, perhaps even more nowadays, as it's a good way to get recognition, which ultimately can increase the chances to get upvotes on posts.

I don't think that everyone will realize that though, or even agree with that statement.
