Actually, in the anime, it is the symbol of a STEAM bath ;) and still is the logo of STEEM the coin btw, you are talking about Steemit.inc logo I think.
STEEM did not change the logo :)

Ur welcome! Btw, did you realize about the STEAM-STEEM similarities? Steem si the Steam who move this Blockchain, I am pretty sure the name and logo came from this idea :D
which would put on the image of a steam machine in my mind...
seems a liiiiitle out dated for a blockchain. whereas ethereum with the gas for the blockchain "fuel" is kind of similar.
