Been away from Steemit;seeking clarification on reputation

Steemit is ever evolving...

I have been away from steemit for about a week and it looks like there are already new features;I keep forgetting that we are only in beta lol.Regardless I have been trying to understand the numbers next to users name which I believe is their reputation,what ive had some trouble understanding is what exactly does reputation do?I can not be the only one confused and seeking clarification,if anyone could explain or link to an explanation I think it would not only help just me but the whole community.Cheers
