High Voting Power, What to do about it?

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

Just lately my voting power has been getting high. Why is this? Because there’s little to vote on as people are posting less.

That includes me, not due to lack of interest but because I want some of my life back.

HF21 has not yet arrived and we are still unsure whether ALL it’s ‘features’ are going to make it but it seems people are preparing for what is to come and the writing has lessened.

While this is not surprising given the state of the STEEM price vs any other coins and the slippage in the charts, it presents me a problem.

Who do I vote for?

Curation trails are something I have never been interested in until recently. I added myself to the #tenkminnows one hosted by @steevc at just a 3% weight and so that solved some of the problem.

But still, the voting power has been hovering around the low 90% region. It’s happened before but not to this extent, so what to do?

Find some big Dolphins, or small Orca’s to circle jerk? Hmm, well I could but I really can’t be bothered and it’s hardly doing the platform any good is it?

I have several Steemians on an auto-vote so I could increase their vote weight?

I would rather spread them out more and I like a certain amount of manual curation even though I don’t comment as much as previously.

Someone wrote about how many articles there are about STEEM on our block-chain (it might have been @steevc) and that from the outsiders perspective, you may as well be reading another language.

Well apologies, but this is yet another STEEM piece of writing. Mind you, I do tend to get more feedback with this topic than any other and that is because this small community is very tight knit.

Does it still have the enthusiasm it used to have? I would say for the most part yes it does.

The hard core brigade are in this for the long run and I count myself as one of those. If you want some inspiration then have a look at @exyle’s posts.

SMT’s have now been mentioned as the priority task. We have heard all this before, but I have seen StINC delivering more in the last few months and I believe it is going to happen.

SteemMonsters is taking off in a big way and I for one have been buying cards like the clappers. The prices are increasing especially for the Gold Foil ones.

I check them daily and grab anything that seems a bargain. It could be a foolish move, but if you don’t take any risks in life then nothing will happen.

Developments are happening and all is looking rosy except for the declining price of the token. I would suggest you wait this out. I know I am.

So back to the original problem of who to use my Voting Power on?

I started following another curation trail, although it may only be temporary. Who better than @curie to follow.

At least I can be sure that my votes are going to decent writers. If you’re in the same position as me then at least consider doing the same.

I think some of it is the lovely/too hot (depending which day and where you are) weather: activity cooled off last summer, too, and around the Easter holidays.

There is some uncertainty about HF21, although commentary seems to be moving more towards how to prepare/cope, and I guess the Steem price puts some people off, although I'm not sure why - it's a great chance to build your account. It took me some thinking about, partly because of how it was framed, but also because the people I'm working with to bring to Steem have been more interested in Steem distribution than Steem accumulation, but I feel okay about it now, especially since the advent of PAL net which demonstrates how a layer can be built on top of Steem/SDB distribution. I'm interested to see whether the proposed HF21 changes will have the desired affect :)

I've noticed my Voting Power creeping up sometimes, but I'm spending more time reading and commenting on PALnet and with my usual #needleworkmonday curation, I've managed to get it down to 77% (very unusual) today.

Following @curie, @ocd and @c-squared as well as @tenkminnows curation trails is a great idea. At least three of them are manually curated and votes will be going to good posts.

Steem Monsters aren't my thing, but I've enjoyed reading posts about them (especially yours) and Next Colony, and it's great that they're taking off. Long may it continue!

Maybe delegation is another thing to consider? @actifit, @dlike and @steemhunt all reward lots of accounts everyday, so are a great way to spread your voting power.

Thanks Shani, I don't know whether anyone really reads these or not. There's some things I don't want to give away as it gives me the edge in battles. There is some strategy playing SteemMonsters.

I do delegate to one or two but that would depreciate my vote which I don't want to do. I see many others are though.

I read most things you write, I especially like the hikes, tasteem reviews and the urbex stuff, but reading about Steem Monsters is interesting, too. I can see why you wouldn't explain everything, but I get the enthusiasm and I can see why the game is interesting to people. I think anyone dropping by and reading one of those posts would be encouraged to stay.

Urbex is getting thin on the ground. There's only so many 'venue's' to visit and we are running a little short.

I seem to find plenty to vote on as well as a little flagging of certain repeat offenders. It's mostly manual, but I'm on the @tenkminnows trail as well as delegating to it. Need to test a little as I've run my vp fairly low again.

I would hope we can direct a little more of the rewards to the creative people who are not necessarily writing about Steem. That gives a better impression to others considering joining.

You know I'm not too worried about what I make, but then I didn't invest my money. I have invested a lot of time though in hope of helping Steem grow.

I've noticed my Steem Monsters card gaining value, but I'm not buying many. I need better summoners, but they are not cheap. Maybe I'll put some earnings aside to upgrade those.

yes, we really need more original content around here again, it seems like everything is all about dApps and reward-centric-in-groups lately... this was once meant to be a content-platform wasn't it?!

There is good content if you seek it out, eg look at the #comics tag. There's only so much I can read about Steem and crypto. I need some laughs.

try 3% on the trails, that seems to work for me. I have that weight on both of them.

That seems too low to do much. I've set it at 25% for now. I use up more on flagging you know who.

Just lately my voting power has been getting high. Why is this? Because there’s little to vote on as people are posting less.

There are still plenty of good content creators who are publishing regularly (among those quite a couple of newcomers). Plenty of people who deserve a vote, and would be really happy with one. The real problem is that - in spite of the fact that there are less posts to weed through - it's still not easy to find them.

Speaking selfishly, I think any love thrown at the @DSound community is voting power well spent. Post HF21, @Dsound 's vote is not going to have the moxy to onboard new musician types like it did when I started on the platform a year and a half ago. I also see you are posting on the palnet tag ... I've had great success finding new worthwhile content via the palnet browser and alot of it is around the same 10-20k SP power folks as myself. I bought it pretty hard on PAL considering the opportunity it presents to actually make a bit of curating impact on here without buying into 100K+ sp.

I really feel bad about mucking up your system with my slothfulness, but, well, you know....

Mine has perilously little to do with actual rewards and much more to do with just old ordinary sloth.

I've actually kicked up some percentages just a little on my voting trail to take up a little of the slack. If everybody decides to write their welcome back post the same day I'll be a 'non player' for a couple of days (which actually fits in rather nicely with the sloth subject when you think about it).

The @curie thing is working OK for the moment. At least I know that I'm not voting up and old crap. It's still tough to get a @curie I think. You really have to put some effort it.

If you need something to throw an upvote at... take a look at @mytunes!

@drakernoise is trying to establish a new weekly music sharing thingymadoob there now that #nowplaying went down the drain with it's owner suddenly resorting to spamming and 100% self-voting...

I'll vouch for that nothing like this will ever be happening on #mytunes, I've known draker on the platform for a while and he's the most humble and kind person you could possibly imagine!

And while you're at it, I'm sure you have some music to drop in that list, too. Doesn't take much time either, a link in the comments is enough as far as I understand.

I see he's into the GooglyEyes stuff of yours! I dropped him a vote on the latest post.

Yeah, he has some #GooglyEyes, too ;)

Much appreciate your vote for him there, but what I meant was actually that @mytunes account he just started for the music sharing thing. The liquid post rewards there are going to be shared equally between everyone that contributes some songs to the weekly list. He just started that thing and I helped him set-up that account and stuff... hehe, either way, thanks a lot!

You should also check out the Utopian trail. Not the main voting account, but the one that votes ahead of time so you can maximize your curation rewards. You also might want to think about adding on some new people to follow. There is still some decent content out there. It is just harder to find these days like you said. Posts don't seem to be making anything at all unless you know someone or buy some votes. It is kind of sad.

I have been doing but still the content level depreciates!

That depends if your looking at USD or STEEM. Will it ever get to a $1 or $2 again. Who knows?

I noticed today my VP has been pretty steady in the ninety % range lately too.

I was recently in the same boat as I was on vacation but since getting back have found myself struggling to be as active for similar reasons you mentioned. I have left most of the auto votes I setup run and looking to curate manually the Introduction posts for my weekly review. However, even that has gotten more difficult as a large number of new accounts are not here for the blogging. Interesting times ahead as the ecosystem continues to evolve!

and looking to curate manually the Introduction posts for my weekly review.

They are very hard to find. There's not so many true new users any more and even less quality ones.

It seems like threespeak and dtube are growing like crazy too. Maybe there’s some new authors there you could check out?

People need to understand that the narrative isn't real. There is no moon in 2020 for steem. Steem is now a small niche social media site with a top 100, not top 10, blockchain token.

Either we can say "let's rebuild from here" or we can say "let's accept and appreciate what we have" -- but the problem is people are still trying to say "steem will take over the world!" and that narrative is a lie.

Steem isn't a big player. It's a successful small niche social media site. It may be this way forever. Right now there is very little indication that Steem has the potential to return to the top 10. Instead of trying to build the next huge thing as fast as possible, maybe we can all take a step back and be more humble about what is going on.

Perhaps not on the blogging side but I'm more optimistic about the future for games and SMT's when they eventually arrive.

If STEEM ever does get about $1 again then the woodwork will open again and many will come back / attempt to get on the bandwagon.
