Spotlight
According to BBC News, in the U.S, determined reporting’s by the Boston Newspapers exposed widespread abuse and how pedophile priests were moved around by the church leaders instead of being held accountable. It prompted people to come forward across the U.S and around the world. Also stated by the BBC News, a church commissioned reported almost 4,000 catholic priest faced sexual abuse for almost 50 years plus more, involving mostly boys. In the movie “Spotlight”, touched bases on how the Boston Globe got these stories out to inform what was going on in the catholic church. In the film, the characters demonstrated communication dynamics through persuasive propositions like facts, values and policy.
The movie “Spotlight” showed to get people to be on your side or to understand what point you are trying to make, you must come prepared with facts. The subject that you are trying to persuade them with must be proven with facts. The movie indicated nothing but facts. Each time a journalist wanted to present a file or a case they had facts to back them up. In the text of speaking persuasively, propositions of facts define a claim that an argument is supported by evidence. The movie had their evidence to prove that the catholic priest was molesting children.
In contrast, in the movie the journalist had to break down the evidence within each case to see how much the case meant but also see if the information of each case was valuable enough to present it to their leader of all those sexual assault cases. In the text, the proposition of value are claims that evaluate the worth of an idea but in this movie a case. You saw each journalist take the time out to look through each case and pull valuable evidence that will help them with forming their stories.
Another significant factor in the movie is that you saw the characters go out of their way to get justice for the victims that were assaulted by multiple priest. They always stated “we should” or “I should” which is an action of proposition of policy. In the text proposition of policy, are claims about “what should we do” and the movie showed that as well. The movie also showed that they had to figure out their next move in proving that these priests needed to be called out.
To conclude, the movie “Spotlight” showed a lot of communication skills, along with showing the world that sexual assault still happens in the church setting. In our society there’s people that goes out their way to prove what's happening in the world. The movie showed great examples of persuasive propositions communication throughout the movie to get their point across.
