Hello Steemians

I invite all my Steemit friends to the 5th week of the Steemit Challenge competition. SLC27-W5 | A One-Day Street Journalist: The Struggle Of Street Hawkers. In the competition, we will examine the struggle of a street hawker. In our daily lives, we see many street hawkers walking around our neighborhoods who struggle just to make a living. Each week, we gain new experiences as a one-day street journalist. I am very excited for another great week, where I will learn more about the struggles of street hawkers.

What places did you visit and what types of hawker businesses did you review?

As a one-day street journalist, I went to Kashiadanga market today. There are several hawkers on the side of the road who make a living by selling different things. Kashiadanga market is located on the side of a busy road. And on the side of this busiest road, you can see hawkers struggling to make a living. Their life struggle is very difficult, which we may not be able to understand. I reviewed a fruit vendor business on the side of the road in Kashiadanga market. This shop on the side of the road is decorated with various types of seasonal fruits. The life struggle of a street hawker goes on from morning to night, facing any situation.

Have you ever bought anything from these stores? Show pictures + videos and show their prices.

Yes, I often shop at these shops. I like shopping at roadside fruit shops because these shops have different types of seasonal fruits arranged in layers which attracts me. Roadside shops have fewer products but they are fresh and the prices are affordable compared to big fruit shops. These small roadside shops make our daily lives easier. Below are some fruits listed with their prices:

When I visited this roadside fruit shop, the hawkers were busy setting up their stalls. I reviewed the quality and prices of the fruits here and also purchased some. I am sharing a short video of the time I reviewed the shop which makes their location clear.

How do they face sidewalk occupation, eviction or police harassment?

IMG_20251030_105017.jpg

Street vendors are often subject to footpath encroachment, eviction and police harassment. Vendors usually set up their stalls or shops on footpaths where people walk. They are subject to police raids when they get into trouble with other vendors over setting up stalls in the same area. City authorities often accuse vendors of blocking footpaths and causing traffic jams because of their stalls. Although many vendors try to leave space for pedestrians, they are still subject to harassment. Most cities do not have formal hawking zones, so vendors occupy any space they can find to set up their stalls or vehicles. This creates a risk of conflict and eviction.

What are their biggest challenges and hopes for continuing this business?

Street vendors face many challenges every day, yet they also hold strong hope for a safe and dignified livelihood.

Biggest challenges:

Many street vendors do not obtain government permits to operate their businesses, which is why they are always at risk of eviction, confiscation of goods, or harassment by local authorities. Sometimes, the police informally demand money, which reduces the profits of street vendors. A street vendor's income depends on the weather and customer flow. Bad weather or festival restrictions often prevent them from earning. Street vendors cannot operate their businesses in a hygienic manner due to inadequate space or facilities, resulting in unsanitary conditions. Many vendors operate their businesses with the same type of goods, resulting in low profits. The cost of goods and transportation increases, which reduces their profits. Even though street vendors sell goods at affordable prices, society often considers them illegal.

Strong Hope

Street vendors hope to obtain legal vending licenses or designated zones where they can operate without fear of eviction. They hope for a steady income to support their families and improve their standard of living. Street vendors hope for well-organized areas where they expect improved waste disposal and protection from adverse weather conditions. They want society to view them as honest and valuable, not as a nuisance. Street vendors strongly hope to be provided with microloans or assistance so that they can improve the quality of their products and move on to formal small businesses.
