🏵️SLC26-W3 | Street Business Diaries: Street Cobbler, Mobile Accessories or Street Clothes.🏵️

Street clothing business is a common thing in urban life and rural towns of Bangladesh. On busy roads, markets, around colleges and universities, or in bus stand and station areas, we often see small stalls or hawkers selling clothes. These clothes are usually cheap, easily available, and acceptable to the common people. Especially students, lower and middle class people depend on street hawkers to buy current fashion clothes at low prices. Therefore, it can be said that street clothing has become an important daily necessity in our daily lives.

What type of daily necessities business is most demand in your area? (Street Cobbler, Mobile Accessories or Street Clothes etc.)

The demand for streetwear is always high in my area. A few reasons can be mentioned:

Demand from students and youth: College and university students want to be fashionable with limited money. So they often buy T-shirts, shirts or jeans from street hawkers.

Trust of low-income people: For those who are not able to shop at brand shops or shopping malls, streetwear is the only solution.

Seasonal demand: Thin cotton T-shirts in summer, sweaters and jackets in winter — these seasonal clothes are also provided by hawkers at low prices.

Pre-festival rush: The demand for streetwear suddenly increases several times during Eid, Puja or New Year.

All in all, the demand for streetwear in my area is permanent and continuous.

Have you bought these yourself or visited them? Show pictures + videos and show their prices.

Roadside clothing store

I have bought street clothes myself several times and visit these stalls often. The big advantage of street clothes is — you can get good designer clothes for less money.

Prices I have noticed (approximate):

Clothing type Price (Rs) Comments

Cotton T-shirts 150–300 Popular for everyday wear

Jeans/trousers 350–800 Similar to brand copies, but slightly lower quality

Casual shirts 250–450 Best sold to students and youth

Girls' tops/veils 100–300 Light quality but cheaper

Sweaters/jackets (in winter) 400–800 Second copies or rejects are more available

These are available at much lower prices than branded shops. As a result, street clothes are often the first choice for buying new clothes on a small budget.

What is the quality of these products? Also, if you have any experience with how long they last, please tell me.

The quality of streetwear can be described in one word as “average”.

Most of these are reject items from garment factories, over-products or surplus clothes from lots.

The fabric and stitching are often weak, but if you buy carefully, you can also get good quality items.

Durability (according to experience):

IMG_20250830_144131.jpg

T-shirts/shirts: On average, they last 5–8 months.

Jeans/trousers: Can be used for 8–12 months.

Color/print: Fades quickly after repeated washing.

Winter clothes: Can be used for 1–2 seasons.

From experience, streetwear can last for about a year if used with care and not worn too regularly. However, you cannot expect the perfect finishing or durability of branded clothes.

How do people behave towards street vendors? (sympathetic, ignoring, bargaining etc.)

People have mixed attitudes towards street vendors.

IMG_20250830_144100.jpg

Bargaining: Almost all customers bargain after hearing the price first. It seems to have become a part of the street market culture.

Sympathy: Many people have a sympathetic attitude towards hawkers, because they know that this business is the only way for hawkers to make a living.

Ignoring: Some, especially wealthy or brand-name shoppers, do not give much importance to street vendors.

Trust-based relationships: If someone gets a good quality item from a particular vendor once, then he comes to buy from the same hawker again. This also builds a social bond.

Behavior during busy times: Many times people buy clothes in a hurry, then they do not argue much about the price.

However, bargaining during leisure time is quite long.

Street wear has provided our society with an opportunity to provide cheap clothing, while also opening up a livelihood for countless people. Although the quality is mediocre, its accessibility, low price, and fashionable design make it attractive to the youth. The street wear market is constantly bustling with bargaining, empathy, and trust.
