Self -Control
If there is a particular attribute I believe every individual should have, I will say it is self control. Without it, you will keep landing in troubles. For me I define self control as the ability of you to be able to manage your emotions and also your actions most especially when you find yourself in a very difficult situation. I mean the ability of you to be able to stop yourself from doing something that years later, you will actually regret it.
Let me use an example. Take for example if someone insults you, you can chose not to fight back. That is a perfect example of self control. It helps you to always make a better decision and this has also helped me to avoid some problems in my life.
To a layman, I would say self-control is like having a “pause button” in your mind. Before you act, you stop, think, and then decide what is right. It is not always easy, but it is very important for personal growth and success.
For me personally, I can easily known someone that have self control when you are able to observe their behaviours and the actions that they carried out. People that have self control does not react to anger quickly. They are calm, they are patient and they are very thoughtful.
People like that van overcome the urge to spend unnecessarily and even engaging in an harmful activities. I have also come to discover that people who listen before speaking have self control because it takes high level of self control to be able to listen carefully before you speak.
Now, is self-control inborn or learned? I believe it is both, but mostly learned. Some people may naturally be calm from childhood, but self-control can be developed over time through discipline and practice.
Research and life experiences show that people improve their self-control by setting goals, learning from mistakes, and being guided by parents, teachers, or mentors. For example, children are often taught to say “sorry,” wait for their turn, and control anger. These lessons help build self-control as they grow.
I personally, on several occasions I have tried to control myself most especially when I am faced with temptations and challenges. Yes it is not easy as I will admit that but I keep reminding myself of the consequences ahead if I carry out that action.
Take for example when I am angry, I will chose to stay quiet because I keep reminding myself the consequence of responding on anger. Yes there are times I failed controlling myself but one thing I have come to discover is the fact that self control is a skill that I will keep learning and learning as time goes on.
