If you were given full authority for one year in your community or country, what is the first issue you would address?

As a Nigerian citizen, the first issue or problem that I would address is the insecurity affecting our day-to-day activities in the northern and southern regions of the country, where herder-farmer conflicts, Boko Haram insurgency, and banditry occur. All these affect our economic activities, particularly in rural areas where the main occupation is agriculture.

In case of herdsmen where they would intentionally directed their livestock to eat cassava or maize planted by the farmers, once the farmers see them they wouldn't accept that to the extent that it will lead to conflict between them. Some farmers are killed alone in their farm and these herdsmen often go beyond by destroying their community which make the farmers homeless.

Why did you choose this issue over others?

I choose this issue of insecurity above others because it is one of the biggest challenges we are currently facing in Nigeria, especially regarding kidnapping, which is very rampant in the North Central and Northwest regions of the country. Kidnappers demand ransom to free the victims, and those who refuse to pay are killed in the process.

Many investors from foreign countries are afraid to invest in their businesses in our country due to insecurity that puts their businesses at risk. Many people have fled their communities because banditry keeps disturbing them, where innocent souls are killed, as well as the king who heads one community being kidnapped. Therefore, the issue of insecurity would be the first thing I would choose because it makes other problems worse.

What is that one difficult decision you would have to make?

The difficulty in decision-making would be the issue of policymaking because I realized that most politicians are involved in this problem in order to destroy the ruling party's ambitions. Once you have meetings with the top officials, you would not know the source that will leak the secret to them.

I would select the most loyal and trustworthy people to work with me to combat the root causes of poverty and the unemployment rate that are causing societal unrest within the community. Many graduates join this insurgency to survive due to unemployment.

This issue of poverty can be eliminated with the limited resources we have available, and this can be achieved through policy-making decisions to solve the problem of banditry and kidnapping. Finding these righteous people can be difficult at times because they may be deceived by money or position.

I would eliminate poverty and address the issue of unemployment by providing vocational skills such as carpentry, barbering, furniture making, and more. All of this will be difficult to implement, but I will do my best.

How would you explain this decision to people who disagree with you?

I would firstly listening to their own side of story without interrupting anyone of them, so that they can build their trust toward me. Doing this would give me the opportunity to heard them clearly as well as to convince them with evidence in order to agree with me.

Patient is necessary in this aspect because some people may use harsh word to the extent that it may result to conflict, we must control our emotion and remain calm so that solution to such problem can be useful to the general community.

Telling them my own idea is necessary without blaming any members that involves, that their own idea or suggestions is wrong. This can be done through series of example stated in a good direction.

Hi @akareen, welcome to thinking and ideas week 1

My Observation:

Judging from the current insecurity in Nigeria, it is of great sense that you address this issue once in command, but since its a regular thing that we all know, it would have been better if you had shared some the measures you would use to get this work done because the government has failed us.

I doubt the possibility of making decisions all by yourself without involving a soul. No matter how well you think you know your subordinates, you must have that one Judas among them, so I think that decision making is a collective thing.

I bet you, 99% of the members would disagree with you instantly.

It sounds a bit like the Wild West... At least, if you believe certain films. But back then, there were heroes who bravely stood up to the bad guys; I guess that's what's missing today? Maybe you would be the one, if you could really eliminate poverty...
