THE DIARYGAME: 06-01-2026, IKOT ABASI LGA FLAGS OFF MATERNAL NEWBORN AND CHILD HEALTH WEEK
The event was flagged off by Dr. (Mrs.) Idara Essien, wife of the Executive Chairman, who emphasized the importance of immunization, family planning, malaria parasite control, HIV screening, vaccinations, and other health services for mothers, newborns, and children
Dr. Essien advised women to register for antenatal care early in pregnancy, ideally once they miss their menstruation, to ensure a healthy pregnancy and childbirth experience
The acting Director of Primary Healthcare, Mrs. Queenship John, praised Dr. Essien's commitment to improving maternal and child health, saying her efforts will significantly reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in the community.
The event featured the distribution of mother and child care kits to expectant and nursing mothers, with attendees praying for Dr. Essien and the local government council.
The Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week will include health screenings, immunizations, and health education sessions, aiming to promote a healthier community.
This initiative is part of the broader efforts by the Akwa Ibom State government to improve healthcare services, particularly for mothers and children. The state has been working to enhance primary healthcare delivery, with a focus on reducing maternal and infant mortality rates
The health week is expected to provide essential services, including child deworming, screening and treatment of malnutrition, antenatal care, HIV intervention, routine and supplemental immunization, and distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
These services will be rendered free of charge and in safe environments.
