Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 139: Is Experience The Best Teacher?
Hello Steemians, what a great day to discuss how experience can change the way we approach things in the future. I have seen most of my friends make mistakes, learn from them, and some avoid them. With mentors and books we can gain raw knowledge but experience helps us trust the step we take next.

• In Your Understanding, Kindly Define "Experience". |
|---|
I define the word 'experience' as the knowledge, practical wisdom, and understanding an individual gains through being part of activities, events, and situations as time goes on. It is not just about what someone has been taught in books or heard from people, but about personal lessons in life about failure, success, struggle, and growth. I have come to understand that experience is a tool that shapes human perception, decision-making, and the ability to tackle the challenges to come with good strategies and maturity. Whether experience is gained in education, work, or daily life experience is a silent teacher that provides us with a deeper understanding.
Furthermore, experience plays a vital role in personal development because it changes theoretical knowledge into practical insights. A person who has seen firsthand hardship often develops resilience, while someone who was exposed to diverse cultures and environments obtains solid adaptability and empathy. In most cases, experience turns out to be a great deal more than just information because it holds emotional depth and real-life use. Experience also helps people to think well, make good adjustments, and prevent constant mistakes. Thereby bringing a massive contribution to societal advancement and individuals' growth.
• Do You Agree Or Disagree With The Statement "Experience Is The Best Teacher"? Defend Your Take |

I must say that I agree with the statement that says that experience is the best teacher, because it helps in the provision of practical and unforgettable lessons. As classrooms, and books are reliable sources of knowledge experience allows people to face problems directly and have a good understanding of life beyond theory. A person who has experienced failure, hardship, and success is more likely to have a deeper understanding than a person who has only studied such situations. The lessons that I have personally learned from experience have since remained in my mind because they are linked with consequences, emotions, and personal growth.
Moreover, experience as the best teacher has also helped me in the development of wisdom, because there was a certain time that I had just been appointed at the class monitor of SSS1, and back in JSS 3 the class monitor failed to called teachers when there time was due, after remembering that the class monitor used to be punishing for not doing what was expected of I avoided being seen as unserious so I called all the teachers for the day once it was their time to teach. This was the time I learned that I was good to have a first-hand experience of the consequences of inadequate prevention.
Lastly, experience helps people to be able to apply knowledge perfectly in their daily activities. A lot of reputable individuals in society turned out outstanding not just for their education, but also because they learnt continuously through their experience. Let's take for instance Thomas Edison who after a lot of trials in creating the electric bulb failed but continued with his experience learnt from each mistake and then successfully invented the electric bulb we make use of today. This reveals that experience doesn't end in passing through situations, but is about being able to acquire the essential knowledge needed for your new step from them. With this, I stand to tell you all that experience is the best teacher.
• Is Learning From Mistakes Faster Or Slower Than Learning From Books Or A Mentor? Share With Us Your Thoughts |
|---|

|---|
Learning from mistakes is usually faster and also has great impact than learning from books or mentors, this is because the lessons from mistakes are personal experience. When people make mistakes the consequences are mostly bound to follow immediately which makes the lesson stick completely. Pain, disappointment, or failure usually causes individuals to reflect back and choose to make the right decisions. There are a lot of cases where we get to learn the true picture of reality through mistakes which cannot be fully understood by theory alone, mistakes make the learning unforgettable and personal.
Although, learning only with mistakes can be slower and more costly than learning from books and mentors at some point. There is no doubt that books contain knowledge that has existed for ages, while you will learn about life from mentors from their past life experience. By learning from others, we can be able to prevent repeating errors and save time, and resources. For example, a businessman who is studying successful methods from an experienced mentor has a high probability of progressing faster than someone who solely depends on repeated failures. This is just to say that adequate guidance and education provide a safer and more effective path to success in a lot of situations, but the catch here is that mistakes prevent another faster because you know what happened firsthand.
• How Would You Balance Between Learning By Experience And Listening To Someone Who Has Been There? |
|---|
Balancing the learning by experience with listening to someone who has been there already requires humility and wisdom. Personal is necessary because of how it helps in developing confidence, independent thinking, and practical understanding. However, relying on personal experience can sometimes lead to mistakes that could have been avoided and unnecessary struggles. Listening to someone who has experience provides you with guidance, valuable insight, and helps you take caution in making better decisions. A wise person learns from the good advice available and also makes room for personal growth by direct involvement and practice.
